Boston summed up for tourists: Typos, fruit salad and meat raffles
By adamg on Mon, 06/10/2024 - 11:53am
Jocelyn has long wondered about the info booth at one end of Faneuil Hall Marketplace plastered with the names of things supposedly associated with our fair Hub:
Like, I get tradition, baseball, innovations, marathons, and baked beans... But typos, fruit salad, and meat raffles? I've only seen those in Attleboro lol

Meat Raffles
Are very much still a thing, even here in Boston. We still have member only clubs, VFW post and others like the K&C. All of them do meat raffles to raise money for charities.
"Boston" Raffles
Grew up in Ashland. Meat raffles there, too. Bleh.
Typos?? Or gyros??
Is that "typos", or is it "gyros" written in the Greek alphabet? (As in the food.)
That was my first thought
But here it is from the unshrunken, original photo:
So unless that's a typo for gyro, it's "typos."
I feel sorry for the custodial staff at Faneuil Hall
They must spend hours each day cleaning up the vomit from all the graphic designers who accidentally look at the booth.
wtf is a meat raffle
I've lived in MA for 25 years, and nearly 40 as a new Englander, and I have never heard of a meat raffle.
Well let me clarify, I have not heard this phrase before especially not outside of a gay bar...
It is exactly what it sounds like
It's a raffle and the prize is meat.
So are the ones
So are the ones at a gay bar.. its just a different type of meat.
Do you buy tickets? I've
Do you buy tickets? I've never heard of a meat raffle either and I've lived in Boston until last month when I moved to Milton..
Puzzled
Meat raffles I get. What's the fruit salad tie-in? Any ideas?
It's the consolation prize
if you are the second name drawn in the meat raffle.
Third prize is
you're fired.
Get them to dine on the fruit
Get them to dine on the fruit that is salad!
Meat is for closers
Meat is for closers
I thought it was sadness
.
We haven't even brought up puppetry yet...
Puppets? Puppets with grudges?
Typos tracks
They clearly forgot to add ‘Tickets’ after Parking
Grudges??
I can see that most things here are available at Quincy Market, but where do I get the grudges?
“Grudges” checks out.
“Grudges” checks out.
Typos - The Massachusetts Spy
I was curious about the Typos and found on OED.com: "OED's earliest evidence for typo is from 1816, in the Massachusetts Spy, or the Worcester Gazette." Wikipedia tells me the Massachusetts Spy was published in Boston by Isaiah Thomas.
Some Boston or Mass. typo connections?
finding "typos" on a sign led me to a little Googling on the subject. Found some connections to typos and our fair region:
The Typo was a name of a newspaper in Boston according to the Library of Congress. The LOC says Huntington Libr Art Gallery & Gardens, San Marino, CA has a copy of the Vol. 4, no. 1 (May 15, 1878) issue
Jeff Deck of Boston got tired of finding typos and decided to form the Typo Eradication Advancement League. He wrote a book about his national journey on this topic "The Great Typo Hunt: Two Friends Changing the World, One Correction at a Time (available on Amazon).
Boston Typos was the name of baseball club- perhaps made up of printers (their FB page says they competed in the Union Printers International Baseball League Tournament
My theory is that typos are common to Mass. because some people have trouble spelling the names of some Mass. cities and towns: Worcester, Scituate, Aquinnah, Cohasset.... never mind the Os/Oughs Southboro/Southborough, Westborough, Marlborough etc.
They left off Massholes.
