All Boston public schools closed tomorrow, thanks, Celtics!
Boston Public Schools has decided that instead of just closing the BPS schools along the Celtics victory parade route tomorrow, they're closing all schools all across the city, so today is the last official day of school.
Employees also don't have to show up for work, but can, if they really want to.
Our school buses transport 23,000 BPS students across our City every day. Given the expected crowds, road closures and detours for the parade route, and our scheduled half day coinciding with the parade times, there is no safe and reliable way to transport our students, especially our youngest learners and special education students, from their schools to their drop-off sites.
The increased traffic could mean students waiting for their bus hours after dismissal, being delayed on hot buses for hours without access to food and water or trying to commute home on the MBTA at the same time as the large anticipated crowds, posing major safety and operational concerns for our students and staff.

What? That’s ridiculous.

So stupid
Very, very stupid planning from the city. Even the timing of the announcement, waiting until right after school lets out on Thursday to announce it so teachers and students don’t realize that it’s the last day of school.
Can we use this as our excuse to fix our dumbass school schedule? Start the Tuesday after Labor Day, shorten the nine day holiday break. Next year’s holiday break is a whole week off, then four more days off and Friday back before the weekend. The last day of school for 24-25 is a Monday half day.
Just. Plain. Stupid.
Update: text from out school “well that was an abrupt close-out to the school year!” — so they had no idea this was coming either.
Teachers all knew at like
Teachers all knew at like Noon today...
BPS informed parents before end of the school day
Just FYI regarding the timing, BPS did inform parents at other schools before the end of the school day today. So teachers and students were informed today that it would be the last day. Plenty of time for goodbyes. But it was certainly an abrupt notice.
Many Suburban Schools
Many schools outside the city had their last day this past Monday 1/2 day. Saw lots of kids with their parents at noon in Chelsea; to name one
Yeah Chelsea was out on
Yeah Chelsea was out on Monday. I'm not sure why Boston is a few days behind tbh. Chelsea generally follows Boston closing protocols unless it's hyperlocal. We are even in the same county so get the same random holidays.
don't you mean Christmas Vacation?
what other holiday qualifies for an entire week off?
Presidents Day
And Patriots Day.
I was wrong
Kids get two full weeks off around Christmas. 12/23, 12/24, 1/2 and 1/3 all off. Screw that.
Given the heat
And lack of AC in most buildings, I'm surprised they didn't cancel classes for most of the week.
Most have AC
90%+ of schools have AC, 10 don’t. (Yes, it should be 100%.) For the 10 that don’t… they provided fans, air purifiers and cool treats.
Cool!
Literally
Cool treats?
Come on, now.
The 90% # is suspect too.
BPS had a project a couple years ago to install AC units in ancient buildings with windows not designed for it.
Jerry rigged them in.
Made it worse quite often because now windows couldnt be opened for a fresh breeze.
But to the bigger point- schools schould have been closed during the heat wave but that would have pushed end of year out another week.
Nobody wanted that.
Jury-rigged
Jerry built. I think because German POWs were used as labor to put up buildings cheaply. Jury-rigged is nautical in origin, if I'm not mistaken.
Or not

OK, not
Etymology
Seems I was also wrong about the German connection.
Nice of you to acknowledge
And thanks for the additioanl info.
They don't do anything..
During the last 2 weeks anyway, they just check off the mandatory amount of days they need to attend.
SHHHHHHH!!!!!
Stop spreading true information.
Complete lack of coordination by the City
Wu and her inexperienced minions selected a parade date without considering how an extra 750k people in the middle of the city with closed streets all over the place might impact early dismissal of all the schools.
How much leeway do you think they had?
Do you think if they'd said "let's hold it on a weekend, say two weeks from now", that would have worked? Come on.
Their option was to say "yeah, no parade", and if they'd done that the whining and moaning and bellyaching would have been really something.
Does that cancel any final exams?
No
The last few days of school teachers are cleaning out their classrooms. They often beg students not to show up. Those that do help clean or watch movies.
Another terrible decision
Another terrible decision from a terrible superintendent. She should’ve made BPS last day on Thursday when she closed schools on the parade route. School has been canceled because of the logistics of the parade before in the city. The notice went out today after kids were out of school that’s no help to parents/caregivers. Between the heat and the millions of people pouring into the city it should’ve been an easy call on Tuesday given some type of notice.
Wait!
You didn't find out how World War II ended!
(Kids turn back to look)
We won!
YEAH! U-S-A! U-S-A!
Amateur night.
Amateur night.
It's June 20
They should be out June 1 anyway, says the guy who finished before Memorial Day down south
You also probably started mid
You also probably started mid-August, right? That seems to be the pattern I see with friends and relatives who live in the South.
Ugh
As a former BPS parent who was driven insane by the system's lack of respect for my schedule -- I can tell you that that last half day is when I would desperately finish up everything I needed to get done at work before the dead week between school ending and day camp starting. If it were cancelled I would do that work after my kids went to bed, starting off their vacation week exhausted.
Oh my
Just wait until the next time you have to see a doctor.
