Warning for rapacious destroyer of Carney Hospital: City will block any attempt to redevelop it for anything but healthcare
By adamg on Fri, 08/02/2024 - 4:11pm
Tom Menino used to do it all the time (in case you're wondering why there are no WalMarts in Boston and why the first Chick-fil-A in town only opened after he left office); now Mayor Wu is telling the real-estate holding company that owns what will soon be the former Carney Hospital that she will block any redevelopment of its 11.7-acre site along Dorchester Avenue that is not solely focused on healthcare, the Dorchester Reporter reports.

Please Mayor let it be the the new relocation of the expansion of the Shattuck project. Anything to prevent it being at Franklin Park and abutting Forest Hills Cemetery. location.
?
Piss Off.
The Carney abuts Dorchester Park and the Dorchester South Burial Ground.
Suck it up JP. Take the burden.
Why is your park and cemetery somehow more important that Dot’s?
That is stupid. Beth Israel
That is stupid. Beth Israel Milton (with a fully-equipped ER) is only two miles (10 minutes) south and you have a host of hospitals close by to the north. It is a large site, near public transportation, with relatively easy access to 93 and 203, next to a bucolic park, and close to Lower Mills shopping and dining; that would be an amazing location for housing. We do not lack medical facilities in Boston, we lack housing.
I understand the anger and disppointment, but let's not let spite rule us like it does our friends at Trump Tower.
Shortage of medical facilities
Shortage of housing in eastern Massacusetts is well documented and discussed.
As someone who spent several hours sitting in the hallway of an ER I think you are way off on your take on out current state of medical facilities. And closing a hospital can't help with the shortage of PCPs.
Yeah.
About the only way to get quick service in an ER is to tell them you have chest pains. Then once you are immediately rushed in, hooked up to the EKG and IVs, and have nitro pills under your tongue you can tell them about the broken toenail you really came in for.
Yes, I exaggerate a bit, but not by much. I have walked out of an ER after several hours of waiting, and have had the cardiac express treatment for something I knew was not and told them was not a heart attack.
People go to the ER for broken toenails?
And I'm supposed to pay for that?
Sounds like a good location
Sounds like a good location to repurpose as a drug treatment facility, be careful what you wish for.
So Do Lots Of Places In
Arlington, Brookline, Concord, Wellesley, Dover, Needham, Weston, Lincoln, Westwood, and Newton.
I don't see either Wu or Healey as being supportive of
Dorchester's interests.
Watch out for proposals for "supportive services" and housing for addicts. Like on Morrissey Blvd.
Unfortunately it looks like the Carney is gone.
Watch out for what comes next.
This is the right move by the
This is the right move by the mayor, but it is a little refreshing to hear the quiet part of rezoning said out loud, "If the mayor (whoever that may be) wants to block construction, it will be blocked. If the mayor wants something to be allowed, it will be allowed. It does not matter what the law says or what anyone else thinks, unless they represent either a large enough constituency or a big enough donor."
big enough donor.
You didn't perhaps didn't get the memo.
This Mayor avoids pandering to special interests or open check books for reelection. She's not like the rest.
Jesus Christ
You don't really believe that, do you?
LMAO Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Yeah right. Sort of like how there's plenty of money in the BPS capital budget to fund a big renovation of White Stadium as long as professional women's soccer ends up being played there, but perish the thought of spending that kind of cash on a less comprehensive project that would also allow for boys' football games to happen there.
Good for her. I don’t trust
Good for her. Don’t say that often. I don’t trust politicians. Just because one wears progressive garb doesn’t mean there’s not a wolf within. I like that Menino preserved our most dear and valuable asset: our character. I’m tired of being disappointed by learning that the “got hope” candidates I keep voting for are corporate shills. Chick fillet and Walmart are blights in a historic town. Relegate them to airports and strip malls.
Walmart really sucks. . .
Unless you like living in a "pharmacy desert" and paying high prices for groceries.
I am a big admirer of Mr. Menino but I think he got this one wrong.
Walmart...
...is not the cure for pharmacy deserts. It's part of the problem.
How is actually
offering a functional pharmacy part of the problem.
Oh, maybe it takes business from some mythical, locally owned, family pharmacy, but they closed decades ago.
I prefer my pharmacy to be OPEN.
Full disclosure: I used the Quincy Walmart pharmacy for a while. They were busy but did the job. I found out by using them that CVS had been overcharging me for some low cost generic prescriptions by charging the full co-pay .
I hate walmart
I hate walmart but I'll give them this, they DO negotiate drug prices for their in-store pharmacies and you can get deep discounts on common medications. And Walmart wants to give you the lowest price, so they will
The thing with Walmart is they can take a loss at their pharmacy knowing nine times out of ten you're also in Walmart buying other things. CVS and Walgreens that ratio is far lower, many *just* go to CVS for prescription pick up.
And yeah I've caught CVS doing this on certain medications where the medication was cheaper than my copay ($10). So why not charge me the lower price vs charging my insurance.
Mayor Wu may strike every
Mayor Wu may strike every “correct” note on every populist issue, but at the end of the day if she breaks Boston that’s all that matters.
You know what?
Incoherent ax grinding is not the flex you think it is.
Nevermind the UHub volunteer
Nevermind the UHub volunteer watch.
Breaks Boston? What makes you
Breaks Boston? What makes you think she specifically is aiming/going to do that? Menino is the one who blundered the seaport into being a Houston like generic zone of upscale boring chains and parking garages. Walsh did little but approve lots of office space. What about Wu makes you think she is going to break our city?
I've heard of saying what you can't build
But now they are saying what you must build?
Ok
And clearly not housing
Because what the community needs is an empty hospital and not more housing.
Menino-light
Menino-light
Menino was a hater
And vindictive, that’s why there’s no Walmart's or Chick-fil-a’s
such a loss.
That Chick-fil-a on Boylston Street is such a wonderful asset to the neighborhood with the parking an unlicensed mopeds outside and the litter. Menino was right. Who needs them ferfucksakes? If you are a company that insults 10 % of the population why are you in business?
Channeling her inner Menino?
Channeling her inner Menino? It depends on which one.
Will it be the early, urban-mechanic Menino who actually got things done?
...or will it be the later-years Menino, that trended much more towards "I want X!", "I don't agree with Y so I'll block it!", wasn't fixing stuff, couldn't get small things done, could only move something forward if it bulldozed & rebuilt large areas, and leaning into things that helped his developer buddies & hurt neighborhoods.
Don't get me wrong. He did a lot of important things, especially in the first half of his run, and continued to do some good - but he was not at his best for many years.
Chick Fill-D minus
There really shouldn't be any of those anti-gay fast "food" dives in Boston. Menino may have been a mumbling fuddy-duddy be hot that one right.
No he didn't
The corporation still got its way, and that loser is decomposing.
Different gender
Same garbage.
And you people reward this arrogance with votes. What if someone wanted to make it shelter?
You Vote
For people that bomb the shelter and kill the women and children inside.
"One less hospital..." (even
"One less hospital..." (even Carney) is a very real concern to Boston - and should be to Quincy and Milton as well.
As discussed in the previous post about this - Quincy already lost its hospital and Emergency Department years ago. Some of their 911 traffic goes to Carney because it is closest. Now, more will go to Milton (Beth Israel) - can they handle the increase? Can Boston Medical Center? Can South Shore in Weymouth?
South Shore Hospital?
Already being overwhelmed with the overflow from the closing of Brockton. A friend who works in Admin there says the state is aware but they get the shrug.
Quincy, which has as many people as Cambridge does not have a hospital. That’s crazy.
Milton operates like it is Nantucket Cottage.
The lack of emergency room access from Dot South is an issue that the state cannot appear to get their heads around.
back in the day . . .
it could have been easily integrated into Boston City Hospital. Take the property by eminent domain.
But Boston Medical Center seems to be totally privatized and not at all subject to the Boston Public Health Commission.
I couldn't find a reference to the Medical Center on the Commission's web page or in its 2024-27 Strategic Plan.
https://www.boston.gov/government/cabinets/boston-public-health-commissi...
Nor could I find a reference to the Public Health Commission on BMC's website.
Oh well, Menino got a wing named after him for selling the hospital
