135 affordable apartments for seniors planned for Jamaicaway site

Rogerson Communities says it will soon filed detailed plans to expand its existing assisted-living and day programs for seniors with memory problems on Beaufort Road off the the Jamaicaway in Jamaica Plain with 135 affordable apartments for senior citizens.

In a letter of intent filed with the Boston Planning Department yesterday, Rogerson said the new apartments would be behind the current Georgian-style Rogerson House - which it says will remain intact, as will the large lawn with trees in front of it, directly along the Jamaicaway.

To make way for the new apartments, Rogerson says it will tear down a former one-family house on its campus along Beaufort Road and part of its current 66-bed assisted living facility for patients with Alzheimer's, dementia and other memory problems.

Rogerson says its current programs will remain operational as it puts up the first phase of its project - a new building that will include new space for those programs and 71 affordable apartments along Beaufort Road.

Once that is finished and the assisted-living facility and day program are moved into it, Rogerson will then tear down part of the memory-care building connected to the rear of Rogerson House and build another 64 affordable apartments for seniors.

Rogerson House has its origins in the South End, where it was found as the Home for Aged Men. It moved to its current Jamaica Plain location in 1957.

JP NIMBYs....assemble!

You don't know what you are talking about. Remember when Pine Street Inn proposed a 200 unit building for homeless people and no one from JP objected? I do. That building is almost ready to open.

I seem to remember a certain mediocre brewery (spurred on by their landlord) objected... and promptly lost all their business.

BPDA doesn't even pay them lip service anyway. Why waste the time of community members, beyond what they ordinarily waste in attending meetings discussing what has already been decided in the Hall.

Are the new apartments for senior citizens with the exiting conditions listed only, or can any old folks apply?

They are for any seniors who meet the income requirements (so no rich people).

Pond living sounds nice though. Having lived in the inner city all my life; Having a water feature other than cement ponds around feels like I'm in the country.

OT: is "Miltonian" the official nickname of people who live in Milton?

Whats with all these age discrimination buildings being built in Boston? We need housing for people who actually work and keep the city running. The boomers are the ones responsible for the housing crisis because they've been NIMBYs for decades. Stop catering to them exclusively by discriminating against people under the age of 65.

There are a lot of housing units full of seniors who raised their families in them. Now the kids are gone, but the parents have too much house. Developments like these allow seniors to downsize.

You’re going to be even more miserable when you get old.
