Dedham getting place specializing in sandwiches built on a foundation of melted cheese

Gilbert's, the hard-to-spot liquor store at the rotary across Washington Street from the Dedham Bob's that closed pretty much as soon as the mega Total Wine was announced down the street, is getting replaced by a take-out place that specializes in grilled-cheese sandwiches with stuff on top of the cheese.

Melty, headquartered in Utah, is making Dedham its first location in the Boston area. It's currently looking to hire a general manager for the store, whose requirements include: "Put on an apron and a big cheesy smile." Also, some past restaurant management experience.

In addition to being across from Bob's, the new location is kitty-corner across the rotary from what was one of the Boston area's first Jersey Mike's, which also sells sandwiches, but not all requiring cheese.

Lot's of traffic there for sure but it's a tough spot to get in and out of. Small lot that is risky to pull in and out of. Seems like with all of the commercial space available I wonder why they chose that location.

Best of luck to them.

It's an even worse spot, if you can imagine, than the one that's been home to a series of otherwise fine restaurants on the other side of Washington Street just before the mall entrance (currently a Japanese place).

It's a lot easier from the other side of the lot.

Isn't bad, for what it's worth.

Giving a "sure, Jan" eye roll about dangerous driving conditions when getting in and out of various establishments ;)

Wonder if they will serve Deseret, too.

Uh… Gilbert’s closed down long before total wine opened up. And as others have pointed out, that’s a weird spot. Not really on Rt 1, crappy parking, hard to get in and out.

You're right, but it closed after the Total Wine was announced, so the writing was on the wall.

I hope Gary's Liquors in the Hancock Village Plaza doesn't go the way of Gilbert's since the arrival of Total Wine.

For most things from what I saw.

In addition to good prices on wine and liquor their deli qualifies as a hidden gem with a daily prepared food menu. The Ruben is on par with Lambert’s.

amazing deli that flies under the radar.

Speaking of fast, good options....I'm new to the neighborhood and keep driving by Johnny's Pockets in Oakdale Square. Pics on the website look decent. Anyone have opinions on it?

The food is decent, but a bit pricey. I think the pockets end up with too high of a bread to meat ratio... the wraps work a bit better. The calzones and pizza are good, but much more expensive than other neighborhood pizza joints.

Recently moved from Oakdale neighborhood. I miss Johnnys Pockets. Very good food, nice staff. Great alternative to Pizzadoros, which is also very good. Hope they both continue to thrive.
