Even as they are announcing the arrest of a man they say was trailing senior citizens wearing gold chains to rip them off their necks, Boston Police are warning of an outbreak of gold-chain snatchings in Roxbury.
Police report they are looking for "multiple men" they say are driving around Roxbury on mopeds looking for people walking along the road with gold chains on - whom they putter up to and rip the chains right off their necks. In one case, one of the robbers displayed a gun, police say.
Aside from one person in their 60s, all of the victims have been between 20 and 30, police say.
Two of the suspects were described as Hispanic men, police add.
If you know anybody with a moped who's suddenly come into possession of some new gold chains that need clasp repairs, contact detectives at 617-343-4275 or the anonymous tip line by calling 800-494-TIPS or by texting TIP to CRIME (27463).

The fact that guys are driving around on mopeds and ripping gold chains off of Seniors is absolutely unbelievable--and unacceptable, to boot. The guys who're doing that deserve to be tried and charged in a Court of Law with their crimes, and to spend some time in jail.

The article says only one victim was in her 60s, the rest were 20-30. Which doesn’t make it OK by any stretch, it still sounds very frightening. Do younger people just wear more gold chains than others ? Or wear them in a way that’s easy to see and grab?

As a senior, I must say this something we dealt with occasionally. We blamed Mr T and disco and shirts buttoned down to mid torso. Everyone wore multiple gold chains back then. Yep. What's next, cutting off fingers of women for their diamond wedding rings?

These days, the reason fingers are getting cut off is so crooks can use them to unlock the person's stolen phone. Then they scout their photos to look for cats and dogs they can steal and eat.

Every time I see some jackass on a scooter doing something stupid like speeding in a ped zone or going the wrong way down a street.. they always have a balaclava on. Gotta hide their face so they can continue to break the law.

If we're still around in 50 years, historians and social scientists are going to have plenty to say about the early 21st century and the two massive upheavals caused by 9/11 and covid.

Heck, I bet many of them will be concerned with a lot of different things, all at the same time! Just imagine: future people might even write books on entirely different topics! Wild!

IMHO I find anything gold tacky. To me its the epitome of trashy people.
Another reason not to wear any gold.
But seriously, these guys are dumb. Yes there is real gold jewelry out there, but a good chunk of it is 'gold plated' or 'pyrite' or even just very polished copper.
So these fools have a 50/50 shot that what they grab is actually gold.
And not much.. a 24k piece at today's gold price is roughly about 100 bucks. Not much in the grand scheme of things.

Don't knock gold when it comes to crowns, though.

I ended up opting for gold when I cracked a tooth and needed a crown. Turns out that compared to the other main options it's way more durable, safer for the opposing tooth, and not actually much more expensive. The dentist was surprised but pleased when I asked for it -- he said he thinks it's superior in basically all ways from a medical standpoint, and that the only reason he doesn't recommend it more often is that it has gone out of style.
(Granted, for me this was on a back tooth, but I probably would have gone for it even in the front. I don't give a shit how it looks, I want my teeth to be healthy.)

This is a medical reason to have one.
also who's your dentist? I'd rather have gold crowns than porcelain for this very reason.
Well, I can tell you, but I can't recommend them.

This was at Dental Arts in Davis Square, but they kind of fucked up the actual measurement and installation of the crown and I had some other bad experiences there, so... I left.
Currently seeing Dr. Casey Cook at Davis Square Dental, who I really like and trust. (I seem to recall he approved of the gold crown at new patient intake.)

I have a gold crown on a back tooth as well. I grind pretty bad and have wrecked enough porcelain crowns that I went with the gold when one had to be replaced and I absolutely love it.

I have gold crowns on a couple of my back teeth, but my dentist said they are great for chomping and grinding teeth, but not so great for biting teeth. Zirconia is better for biters.

Look at the possible penalty for various crimes vs. the likely gain. It's really stupid. The stupidest has to be trying to rob a bank.
