Jamaica Plain record store to move its platters that matter to Northampton
By adamg on Mon, 09/16/2024 - 11:31am
Deep Thoughts Records on South Street in Jamaica Plain announced this morning it's closing up shop on Sept. 29 and moving to the Happy Valley - closer to where its owners live:
We very much treasured being in Jamaica Plain for 11 1/2 wonderful years, but the ability to host our business within a healthy commute of our home is an opportunity too good to pass up. Our amazing JP crew is the only reason we were able to live so far from DT for so long, but the time has come for us to be more hands-on again, and we truly cannot wait!

Their customer demographic lives in Happy Valley?
J.P. is too urban, more crime, mostly rap/hip hop fans?
Y'know, I didn't write a long, meandering piece on their move
The answer's right there, should take about 5 seconds to find it: They're moving to Northampton because it's a lot closer to where they live.
I mean, if you know anything about Northampton, you'd also hazard a guess that in terms of music and medium on which to hear it, Northampton and a good part of JP would be pretty similar.
YEP!
I actually left the Greater Boston Area (*gasp*) to The Happy Valley a month ago. NoHo has the similar type of demographic. Except we have more cows.
Peace/out
And...
...people who have lived there for a while despise the term "Noho", which was invented by parvenu from New York.
Parvenu
Parvenu who are prone to wander up from NYC area in search of flea market and quirky used vinyl finds.
I sincerely apologize for
I sincerely apologize for using the gauche term “NoHo”. As a UMass alum, I should have known better….
It’s The People’s Republic of Northampton. (Sorry/not sorry Cambridge!)
Nah
It's Northampton, or Hamp.
Pro-Tip
Call it Hamp, not Noho.
I was not aware of this shop.
I was not aware of this shop. I will share closing date with the music lovers I know.
As good as digital phidelity may be, it only seems vinyl captures the aether, ambiance and quintessence of a recording session.
I have a zillion LPs...
... and still play them -- but I will take well-made CDs (and digital releases) any day. I doubt very many normal-eared people can hear any genuine differences.
This was my goto place for
This was my goto place for RSD's and when I found myself with free time in JP. I suspect Tres Gatos also had a hand in this. They will be missed. Sounds like the amazing staff of the JP store are getting hosed though, as I assume they will not be at the NorthHampton location from this announcement.
live shows too
Saw a terrific show in the basement of DT seven or eight years ago- Endless Boogie with Stephen Malkmus. Death Pesos opened. Face melter!
After research of local vinyl
After research of local vinyl record shops recently I decided to buy a Bluetooth turntable.
So of course one of the closest local shops to me is moving out of town.
Sometimes you just can't catch a break...
I think there are still one
I think there are still one or two record stores left in Boston.
