Seems the city of Somerville does a "happiness" survey every couple of years. Cambridge Day reports Somerville residents are pretty content, although most worry about being prices out of the city. But Somerville is united as one in hatred of rats:
Responses showed "an extensive hatred for rats," Gartsman said. "It got violent in the comments."

If only they got so very passionate about not doing the things that create the ecosystem for rats, such as not leaving their garbage in accessible spaces and not littering.

Having separate compost bins/collection helps with this so the food isnt in trash cans like in Boston and Cambridge. Once we started (paying) for compost collection in Somerville the rats werent in our trash bins since there was no food and the food is in the kitchen pail and then a sealed bin on pickup.

They really do!

I miss mine. Gonna get some more some day.
I know the wild rats aren't domesticated (as opposed to "fancy rats", the kind you get in pet stores) but I still like watching them because they remind me of my pets...
That’s the nicest thing I’ve heard all day.
