Dragon Chef with windows papered over today.
The Boston Licensing Board yesterday approved a food-serving license for Cliff Richard to open Roslindale Market Kitchen on Washington Street at Basile Street in Roslindale Square, where Dragon Chef used to be.
The restaurant's Web site promises:
Our Market Kitchen will offer healthy snacks and simple take-out geared to eating at home. Our recipes and classes focus on ingredients found in our village’s shops, freshly milled flours, and our region’s farmers markets.
We will be an outlet for Pure Pastry’s multigrain pastries, host winter CSA box drops and offer classes based on regionally reliant cooking geared to family households.
The plans approved by the licensing board call for 18 seats and hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The board did not require any sort of public meeting on the proposal because the new restaurant would be moving into a previously licensed location.
The restaurant's location could be a temporary one, as Arx Uban is continuing with its plans to replace the entire block with a 31-unit apartment building, for which it has won approval from both the then BPDA and the Zoning Board of Appeal.
In addition to the now former Dragon Chef, the one-story building planned for replacement includes Bob's Pita Bakery, Delicious Yogurt and the Rozzie Square Theater.

There used to be one in Brighton Center. It had a big glass window in front so you could watch the guys smoking cigarettes and cooking from the sidewalk. Great chicken fingers.

When I first moved to Roslindale in the 90s, one of the first take-out meals I got was from Dragon Chef. I got memorably queasy right away, and never went back. Obviously it wasn’t a frequent problem as they managed to survive 25+ years without me.

I've learned Arx Urban, the developer that now owns the building, is continuing with its plans to replace it with apartments, so the new restaurant is kind of an extended popup (the new building will have space for the theater and the yogurt place).
No more Bob's Pita?

My supervisor from the Roslindale area says Dragon Chef was frequently shut down by Health Department violations. That adds some gravitas to the Mark- post.
