Gray fighter jets at Terminal E at Logan

Roman the roving UHub photographer spotted fighter jets sitting on the tarmac by Terminal E this morning. WBZ reports the jets are here to honor Capt. Richard Stratton, a Vietnam War Navy veteran and Quincy native who died last week at 93.

Fighter jets in Whoville…(Easthampton)

I thought the skies were a bit loud this morning as I was doing my errands. There were a few jets taking off from Westover it looked like they had a point and a purpose.

It’s funny that I still remember the sound of these types of jets from growing up near the Naval Air Station in South Weymouth.

We always had a ton of jet noise from the naval Air station, but it was awesome during the air show when I could watch the Blue Angels fly in formation directly over my home.

Then there was the time when all us fifth graders got to walk over from the Union Street School to watch the air show rehearsal up close (and to bring home armloads of military propaganda.)

Maybe we ought to reconsider honoring the participants of unjust wars. There was nothing honorable about "serving" in that war.

Stratton first served in the MA National Guard in 1947, just 2 years after what I'd assume you'd describe as our participation in a "just" war. In 1955, he enlisted in the Navy, years before we started sending troops to Vietnam and about 11 years before was first deployed over there. He may have volunteered to serve, unlike many who didn't have a choice at all in going to Vietnam, but I doubt he expected to serve in a conflict like the CF that was our war in Vietnam, certainly not the way we know it now. Or I guess we can spit in the faces of the remaining Vietnam veterans just for nostalgia, that seems to be an option you'd support.

I met Richard Stratton a couple of times at memorial events. He clearly had a bad time at the Maison Centrale aka Hanoi Hilton. The only injustice many Dorchester Vietnamese see is that we left and stopped arming the ARVN. They still carry the RVN flag in parades and fly it from homes. I've seen the same snark from groypers about WW II vets, "they fought the wrong enemy." You've got 20/20 hindsight, not seeing it in the context of the Cold War. The reality is that nation means some kind of fighting solidarity. The trick is to have a system which only fights just wars, not the invasion of Canada.
