Man shot in South Boston confrontation with police

A man being chased by police wound up getting shot in the chest around 1 p.m. outside 371 Old Colony Ave., across from Moakley Park, AlertNewEngland reports.

Police say officers were investigating possible drug sales and that the man opened fire first:

Upon arrival officers observed a male suspect matching the description given. As officers approached, and announced their presence, the suspect fled and officers pursued. The suspect began shooting at officers who returned fire. The suspect was shot and transported with life threatening injuries to Tufts Medical Center. Officers were also transported to area hospitals for further evaluation.

Police recovered a firearm from the suspect along with assorted narcotics.
