Suburban kids run amok in Downtown Crossing, beating some people, throwing bottles at others, police say

Boston Police report detaining four suburban youths, one just 11, on charges they and some of their pals went on a beating rampage in Downtown Crossing last night.

Police say that officers responding to a report of "a group of juveniles causing a disturbance and throwing bottles at people" at Washington and Franklin streets shortly before 7:50 pm.

Upon arrival, officers observed a group of juveniles fleeing from the scene heading down Franklin Street towards Hawley Street, where they were stopped. All the juveniles were uncooperative with officers.

A total of five adult victims were still on scene at Franklin Street and Washington Street; three of the victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries; victim one was kicked and punched while on the ground, victim two was punched in the back of the head and victim three was punched in the jaw.

Prior to attacking the victims, the group of juveniles were removed from TJ Maxx after causing a disturbance inside of the store.

An Arlington 12-year-old, a Framingham 16-year-old and a Cambridge 14-year-old were charged with being delinquent by means of assault with a dangerous weapon - shod foot - and affray. An 11-year-old from Arlington, too young to be charged, was released to a parent, police say.

Police add that several other suspects, all between 15 and 17, will be summonsed to Boston Juvenile Court.

Parents should be hauled in for neglect. How do 11 and 12 year olds (from Arlington no less) end up in DTX to assault bystanders?

There's only one way that happens: absent parents.

I thought the whole reason for not expanding the Redline to Lexington was to keep this type of person out of the community?

Why call them kids and not children? Kids are baby goats

Why?

A 17-year-old is still legally a "juvenile," but I wouldn't call exactly call him a child.

They're barbarians. They ought to be punished so severely, and publicly, that any others of their ilk will hesitate to follow their example.

"An 11-year-old from Arlington, too young to be charged, was released to a parent, police say."

Because the parent is equipped to keep this child under control and out of trouble?

But I can't imagine putting an 11-year-old in jail is going to be very helpful for their well-being, either.

Cambridge is a suburb of Boston, just like Newton, Malden, Quincy and a bunch of other municipalities are.

swarming into Boston from the hinterlands to cause the trouble they can’t at home where the perceived consequences are greater. I feel like this is a very old story.

I believe the name of the game is Knockout and is played on the streets and in the subway at DTC.

Is this another TikTok trend? How did these kids even end up together downtown? 11 and 12 year olds in a group with older teens from other towns? I know kids get obnoxious together but what makes them think this is something they would get away with?

I hope the victims are alright. Awful.

you know everyone's first thought was these were inner-city kids.

There is a long-time UHub reader who just hates it when I point out suburban residents doing bad stuff in Boston, and yet, I keep doing it because while there are people in Boston doing bad stuff, there are people who come here from the suburbs to do bad stuff.

So, seriously, your first thought on reading a headline that starts "Suburban kids run amok ..." is to blame Boston kids? You really need to work on your assumptions if you're that completely biased against Boston kids.

I'm talking about the crime itself, not the title of this article.
TBH I knew about the crime before I saw it here.

I don't hate it; I just like to point out the fact that you have a bug up your ass about suburbanites for some reason.

I can't speak for Adam and what behaviors he may have experienced from suburbanites, but I will say that when I lived in Boston, I found it super annoying when suburbanites came to Boston and complained about things that were either imaginary (violent crime everywhere and particularly directed at THEM) or that they were a large part in creating (Red Sox fans taking up a disproportionate amount of space on the Green Line during rush hour and complaining loudly about how crowded it is). I had the experience more than once of someone who lived in the suburbs telling me how "dangerous" my own neighborhood was and how people simply could not walk the streets that I walked every day and never came to harm. Is this all suburbanites? Hell no, but the ones who are not behaving like this blend in, or at least don't stand out in annoying ways. Annoying people get noticed. I'm not sure that noticing them amounts to having a "bug up your ass".

just like everyone else on the T, these young individuals are pissed that the system is borked up? Like I said before, the peasants are revolting!

Against people walking down the street in DTX? That makes sense...
