Man shot and robbed of his moped on Geneva Avenue in Dorchester; suspect charged in connection with case

A Randolph man was ordered held because he couldn't come up with $5,000 bail at his arraignment Monday on charges he had something to do with the shooting and moped robbery of a man on Geneva Avenue at Westville Street shortly before 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Yanni Julien, 30, was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a loaded firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and several motor-vehicle offices, the DA's office says.

Police found Julien and another man, both matching the description of people involved in the shooting and robbing, and both on mopeds, at Columbia Road and Blue Hill Avenue, the DA's office reports:

As officers initiated a traffic stop, one of the individuals fled the area, while the other, later identified as Julien, remained on scene.

Officers conducted a pat frisk and immediately felt what they believed to be a firearm in Julien’s fanny pack. The fanny pack was unzipped and officers observed the muzzle of the firearm. Julien attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended.

The recovered firearm was determined to be a Taurus 62S 9mm with one round in the chamber and five rounds in the magazine.

Innocent, etc.

Moped, or scooter? What have investigative journalists found about the motor scooters confiscated by the BPD? Were they owned by the riders? Stolen? Owned by a front? A syndicate? Bought by a straw purchaser? Has there been an uptick in scooter thefts post confiscation? Did the people stealing scooters lose a scooter in the confiscations, or connected to those individuals?

In 2024, it looks like motor scooter/moped robbery is what phone (then called smart phone) robbery was in 2012.
