Live Boston News reports that a man who chased two other people from the Chipotle on Boylston Street into the Chick-fil-A a couple doors down and was about to stab them refused a demand from an off-duty officer who happened to be there to drop the knife, so the officer pulled out his service revolver and shot him, around 5:30 p.m.
The man was rushed to a local hospital, where he died.
Police shut Boylston Street and stopped traffic as far away at Dartmouth and Stuart streets as they investigated the incident.
Chick-fil-A employees fled the store for safer confines at a store on Newbury Street - so many of them that police asked the MBTA to send in a bus to transport them to the homicide office at BPD headquarters for interviews.
