Night of violence in the Theater District: Four shot

Boston Police report four men were shot outside Venu on Warrenton Street just as the club was getting out for the night. The victims, in their 20s and 30s, were taken to local hospitals and are expected to survive.
Police say officers arrested a woman near the scene on a charge of illegal weapon possession, but that she did not appear to be involved in the shootings.
Both clubs, which have the same owner, have had a series of violent outbreaks over the past couple of years that have led to license suspensions by both the Boston Licensing Board and the Mayor's Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing.
A riot at Venu last November that took police from across the city to break up cost Venu its license for 11 days. Earlier this year, a Venu club goer beat up another patron and threatened him with a gun. A Rumor patron was stabbed in July, 2010. Last month, police say, an argument that began at Venu ended with a shooting at a Roxbury gas station. In another incident at Rumor, police watched bouncers run across car roofs in pursuit of men the bouncers say had jumped them with knives and brass knuckles.
Emerson Police sent an alert to students around 3:30 a.m. warning them to stay inside their dorms. Sarina Tracy forwarded a copy:

A shooting has occurred in the area of the Roxy on Tremont St. At this time we do not have any descriptions or suspects, Several people have been injured ( no students). The BPD and the ECPD are at the scene. If you are in the residence halls you should stay there, if you staying with friends, stay there. The BPD believes the suspects are not in the area of the college at this time. All entrances to the residence halls are manned by the ECPD and Securitas.

It seems like there was less violent crime down there
when it was (almost-but-not-quite-depending-on-who-you're-talking-to) part of the Combat Zone.
When there was a lot more crime everywhere ...
... only the worst of these sorts of things ever made any impression in the news.
We have to remember that crime rates are vastly lower than in the 70s and 80s, and that we hear a lot more about the crimes that do happen.
Perhaps because in the 70s and 80s
there was more peaceful pot smoking and less angry alcohol. The clubs are likely over-serving (at least according to WBZ!)
Perhaps I'm generalizing but I don't remember quite so many mean drunks, and I frequented Boston 'clubs' in the 70s & 80s, and worked for several years at the Music Hall in the 70s, often until the wee hours.
Over serving?
No. It's troublemakers and gangs moving out of their normal territory.
and as said, Crime is a lot lower than in the 70's and 80's, so scuffles that would have never been headlines because of more serious crime being reported are now front article stuff.
Bar fights are still a staple of movies, but in real life now a days?.. not nearly as much as they used to be.

What makes pot peaceful and booze angry? Depends on the person. And some people do drink in moderation. With recreational drugs there's no stopping till reaching that high.

There is more than ample data in the universe for how alcohol fuels aggressive behavior. The degree to which it does so is individual, sure.
There is more than ample data that THC does not fuel aggressiveness.

I was the one who responded to "with recreational drugs there's no stopping till reaching that high" with the Boston Herald comment. Not only did the "no stopping" remark technically make no sense, it reminded me of "pot leads to the harder stuff" and all the "dirty hippie" type cliches of over 40 years ago, still so often found in Boston Herald comments.

Crime rates of the late 80s
Crime rates of the late 80s 90s and 2000s are far higher than in the 70s. in 1975 boston had 25 murders. there were 152 in 1990 and 72 last year
Late night Warrenton Street
I used to work at the Charles Playhouse and get off at about the same time as the clubs would close. At 2am on a Friday and Saturday night when the clubs let out the streets there are a madhouse with hundreds of kids, drunk or worse swarming around. It is impossible to drive down the street until about 3am. Every week it would seem there would be fights of some sort not usually so serious as this, but alcohol fuels jealousies, bordering on the out of control.
I used to just hole up in the theatre until 3am when the crowds had cleared to go home, just to avoid the idiocy.

These reports will never go away. You can change the club name, the location, the management. The issue is the people who attend the clubs. That's what creates the violence.
