State Rep. Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk) has proposed increasing the speed limit from 65 to 70) on sections of the turnpike, I-95 and I-91.

Winslow tells WBZ most people drive faster than 65 anyway and raising the limit would bring some consistency back to police enforcement of speed limits.

MassDOT reports it's opening the remaining fourth-lane sections of 128, er, 93/95/1/Hut!, between Randolph and Westwood this week. Schedule of segment openings. Important note:

With the opening of the new fourth travel lane, the authorized use of the breakdown lane for travel during weekday peak commuting periods will be discontinued to enhance driver safety and provide emergency vehicle access.

In other words, from now on, the breakdown lane is only for breaking down in.

Gobble gobble hey

About the last thing you expect to see while you're driving on an interstate is a live turkey in the car next to you, giving you the eye. But there the bird was, around 7:30 p.m. in a Hyundai with Maryland plates, heading north on I-95 in Sharon.

Just passed 5 cars that have overheated on 95. State Police were helping out.

Prime time later today, especially tomorrow, for tire blowouts. Preventable - Almost always from low tire pressure.

First a ginormous crash shut 95 in Newburyport, then, just in time for the evening rush, a truck hit a utility pole, bringing electric lines down on 128 at Rte. 1 in Peabody, shutting the entire road.

Impact with an 18-wheeler on I-95 in Foxboro today, that is:

... Since I was only a quarter mile from the accident I was able to get out of the car and like many other drivers, actually walk the pavement of I-95. Sure the tie-up may have been a bit inconvenient, but I was still having a better day than the guy in the F-150. ...

Casey Ross has the details on proposals to raise $20 billion over the next 20 years just to keep our existing roads, bridges, tunnels and public transit systems from falling apart even more. How about 5-cent/mile tolls on I-93, I-95, I-495, to start?

Why do people still use '128' to refer to Interstate 95?

As it was explained to me by several Boston and Providence natives, the road is Interstate 95 and no longer actually 128. Naturally, this leaves me very curious about why they do it.
