New sidewalk open on Washington Street in Forest HIlls

Longtime Arborway observer Clay Harper took a look at the new sidewalks around Forest Hills station today:

Sidewalk open from FH Gate of @ArnoldArboretum all the way to @harvestcoop. Bike paths, not quite.

Old MBTA map showing Arborway line

Pat from Boston notes that Hynes station still has maps showing the E Line going all the way to Arborway (even if in the "temporarily suspended" format), something it hasn't actually done since Dec. 29, 1985.

Architect's rendering.

The Board of Appeal today approved a developer's plan to replace the current Laz parking lot across from the Forest Hills T stop with three six-story apartment buildings.

In a few days, maybe people will have adjusted, but at least this morning, the re-alignment of traffic on Washington Street between Ukraine Way and New Washington Street caused headaches for motorists and people trying to get to the T station by bus. Read more.

New trees along the Arborway in Jamaica Plain

Arborway project chronicler Clay Harper shows us the first new trees to be planted along the roadway - 16-to-18 foot elms. MassDOT plans call for 560 trees to be planted along the new surface roads - or about 400 more than were there when the Casey Overpass still hulked along.

Todd Consentino attended a MassDOT update session on the Casey Overpass/Forest Hills rehab project tonight and reports that the work has fallen a year behind schedule: Three months due to the inability to work under the mega snowpiles of 2015 and now nine months because the state is having problems buying six ceiling-mounted "jet fans" to ventilate and cool the Orange Line tunnel under the new ground-level Arborway. State officials say next week is when workers take the first real bite out of the Casey Overpass - they're scheduled to remove a piece of the abutment on the rotary side of the hulking, crumbling bridge.

Along with that comes the first overpass-removal detours: Traffic heading from the rotary into Jamaica Plan will be diverted onto the temporary road that's been built alongside the Arborway bus depot - which means the gazillion traffic lights the state has installed will blink into use.

New lane along the Casey Overpass

Clay Harper, who has been chronicling plans for the Casey Overpass, watched workers smooth out the new temporary lane along the overpass yesterday, in preparation for the demolition of the overpass. The work has also included taking down trees - yesterday, workers chopped down the trees along the upper busway at the Forest Hills T station.

Prescient drivers who brought long books with them had plenty of time to catch up this morning. Hyde Park Avenue into Forest Hills was, once again, a complete mess. It was joined this morning by the West Roxbury Parkway and Arborway/Jamaicaway where delays stretched way back, in turn causing a backup on Walter Street that extended all the way to Henry's, where, at least, motorists could stop for a candy bar and a lottery ticket.

With contractors now getting ready to begin tearing down the Casey Overpass, MassDOT will hold its first construction-update meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Boston English auditorium, 144 McBride St. in Jamaica Plain.

The Globe reports on a hearing this morning in West Roxbury District Court for Nikolas Papadopoulos, charged with causing a crash that sent six people to the hospital last year - permanently injuring two of them, one a Dorchester father of three, the other just 14 at the time.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports that because he withdrew his plea, Papadopoulos is now scheduled for trial in March.

This afternoon, somebody called police to report a coyote was just lounging on her rear porch on the Arborway up near Centre Street in Jamaica Plain

Shortly before 7 p.m., a woman called in from one of the paths in Stony Brook Reservation near the George Wright golf course on the Roslindale/Hyde Park line: She was walking her dog when she noticed two coyotes were following them. Before police could arrive, however, two men in the area spotted her and escorted her to safety. No word if either of them was named Elmer.

State historic-preservation officials on Friday acknowledged there's no feasible alternative to replacing the apparently historic Shea Circle when the Casey Overpass comes tumbling down, Clayton Harper reports.

Harper attended a Friday meeting between the Mass. Historical Commission and the state highway officials anxious to replace the crumbling overpass with a series of surface roads before the thing tumbles to the ground of its own accord.

The MBTA has rejected a proposal to move the "temporary" bus yard to American Legion Highway in favor of a plan to rebuild the current bus yard - and hand over several acres to the city for housing and parkland, the Jamaica Plain Gazette reports.

However, the T has no plans to fund the rebuilding proposal.
