Nantucket residents say they're only thinking of dead baby whales, not their views, in suit against offshore wind-energy project

CommonWealth reports on the lawsuit against what would be the nation's first large offshore turbine farm by some Nantucket residents - with financial backing from an out-of-state group that claims its main goal is "protecting individual liberty."

It wasn't about the whales until they ran out of other options and then all of the sudden they care about whales!
Meanwhile, we have dirty oil peakers coming online on these more-and-more-frequent hot days and god forbid we generate some clean power locally. Plus the whales won't do so hot if the ocean boils.

Nantucket doesn't generate any power. The water department estimated that there were 100k on the island three weekends ago.
All its oil and propane are brought in by boat.
The island used to have its own diesel generators but they were closed down about 20 years ago when a cable was run from Barnstable. So, therefore they already get most of their juice from an oil fired plant in Sandwich.
One lesson to Nantucket, since Block Island put in their turbines, right off shore, not the same distance between the State House and downtown Norwood as the Nantucket ones would be, the noise pollution is down on the island, and hotel prices have doubled.

For the record though, I think the complainers (whatever their skin color) are lying about the whales.
I'm surprised someone hasn't anchored a boat out there....
and claimed the windmills would be a health hazard to their home. I think that is why the Plymouth turbines haven't been on at all. Those things just sit there and are not running every time I have driven by over the past few years.

The one right next to Route 3? Lawsuits over the software / construction and town busybodies saying they are getting (insert disease) from them.
If you come in Route 44, you will notice that three smaller, but not much smaller windmills, on private property only steps from the Kingston Town windmill, are turning all the time. The public ones in Fairhaven turn all the time.
Scituate just told their citizens who complain about the 10 year old windmill on the Driftway, that they will be in a most bureaucratic manner to kiss their own arses and the windmill, which pays for all town electric needs, isn't going anywhere. Good for Scituate.

Thought that was Plymouth. Also remember the story of the guy in Scituate who had the constant humming and shadows from the wind turbine there. I wonder what happened to that guy.

Leaded gas started in 1920 and was removed in 1975. So it’s use might not be specific to the Boomer generation.

Perhaps that's true, but
I shudder anytime anyone speaks about huge swaths of the population (race, age, etc) in a negative light.
It's very rare that one large demographic shares the same view on the same topic. That's true for baby boomers and it's true for Whites (and Blacks) who live in West Roxbury.
People who file lawsuits trying to block off-shore windfarms for bogus reasons? Sure, they are sociopaths.
But it fits into a larger pattern
Boomers have been in charge since 1992. Any response to climate change, or lack there of, is under their leadership.
A Boomer is suing to stop offshore windmills because it would affect their views while society is desperately trying to find cleaner energy sources. That’s fits into the broader generations general attitude.

"Boomers" have been the ones to lead the research that has shown exactly what is happening with the environment too. Some of the best scientists and researchers are boomers.
A few specific people are trying to stop the windmills and they happen to be of a certain age. Their age is the only thing they don't have control over. It's not as if many people 20-40 own seafront homes in Nantucket. In a few decades, that will change.
Net wealth is a much better indicator than age when it comes to broader assumptions.

As much as the Nantucket
As much as the Nantucket residents are obviously driven by self interest, offshore wind is a bad investment anyway - it's too expensive. The dollars spent subsidizing it are better spent on either distributed solar or on improving the grid.
The USA has a huge number of inland places with good wind conditions that are already under contract to have wind turbines built as soon as the regional transmission lines get expanded to carry the additional power from those locations to big cities.

How about boycott all boats coming to Nantucket since boat collisions are high on Right Whale's mortality list?
Do not eat any fish since the fishing boats use nets that can kill whales.
Do no eat any scallops unless they are taken from the harbor by those guys who still do walking in the harbor water to harvest them.
Complaining about wind power turbine height by these people is incredible. One of them lives mid-island. (Mid-Island has all the ambiance of a 1980's subdivision in Saugus with no trees). The other has a good 15 houses between her and the water. Complaining about the height of these things is like someone in Burlington saying the Hancock Tower is going to affect their view. Maybe they can see them from the beach, sure, but it would be like being in Rockport and complaining about the height of One Financial Center.
How about the guy from Delaware, you know the state which is one big petro-chemical plant blended with chicken farms? The stones on him. This Caesar Rodney Institute has the revenue stream of about two teachers with 25 years experience but yet has had DuPonts on their board. This is big oil trying to block clean power yet somehow big oil looks the other way when their tankers take out a breeding right whale. Get bent.
I love Nantucket. I like it even better when the rich go away after Labor Day.
I hope any younger relatives of Val, Mary, and David don't get killed fighting in a war for oil. That would be a real shame to take a stand for your view.
Honestly not getting it
I'm against despoiling nature in general, but there are plenty of man-made ingredients in nearly every view out there, and we're handling it. We adapt to it. I have a windmill directly across from my house. When I first went up my reaction was that this big thing really stuck out; now I don't even notice it. It's just part of the landscape.
Not to mention,
they haven't exactly gone out of their way to make offshore windmills blend in, yet. Paint the blades and the shore-facing side of the tower a shade of bluish gray and they'll be a lot harder to spot. Just put on a few lights and some radar reflecting material to keep away boats and planes. (I assume those are already being used, but I'm just pulling this from my backside.)

I like windmills! I'm honesty looking forward to seeing a forest of them out at sea. 15 miles is actually going to be a bit too far; you'll only be able to see them on a really clear day.

Am I the only one that actually thinks windmills have a "cool" look to them? I honestly don't think their the eyesore that they get made out to be.
