At least it's a baby step. Quality education for all. Everywhere.

The Jaguars are sometimes called the Jags.

The Patriots are sometimes called the Pats.

The Dolphins are sometimes called the Fins.

The Buccaneers are sometimes called the Bucs.

The Titans......

A folk duo I saw years ago had a song about baseball with the lyrics:
"We played the White Sox (We beat their sox off!)
We played the Red Legs (We beat their legs off!)
We played the Astros....but it rained that day"

Also: good move, from an ARHS graduate

Using Greek mythology is not cool, Greek society was very patriarchal and they were major slave holders. We can do better.

Plain and simple.

Whoa, inanimate cutting tools are racist now? Next, you'll be claiming that tblades are racist.

Check out Wakefield’s football team mascot and name. Much more offensive than tomahawk.

Weapons are bad.
Algonquin fluffy pillows?
That will intimidate their opponents.

There is, of course, nothing inherently racist about tomahawks, nor for that matter chopsticks, watermelons, or turbans. Or even about a high school in a predominantly Mohawk region of upstate NY, 60% of whose players are Mohawk, styling itself “the Mohawks”

It’s all how the branding is presented and what else it’s bundled with.

But of course you know all that, and you’re just gratuitously being a dick here.

even for you, this fruit might as well be squished to bits

Ah yes, the predictable screeching of the hit dogs, working themselves up to a good state of grievance.

(if the central point of your argument is that no one should care about the use of "Tomahawks", you should care even less if the name is changed)

There weren’t a lot of clouds for them to yell at yesterday.

i think that changing the name will allow us to forget that this region was mostly native-american at one point (back when before there was even an america).

But maybe we should ask our Wampanoag, Massachusett, Nipmuc, and Wabanaki, etc neighbors how to keep that memory alive. I have a feeling that seeing a tomahawk on a football helmet isn't it.

The same goes for the state flag. Whatever it is that we collectively decide to do with the Indian on the current flag, I hope it is done with the input of how Native people want to see themselves represented on official state symbols.

the fighting illini have ceremonies and share their tribal culture prior to home games and stuff... i think something similar with florida state.

so maybe remove it as a mascot but have a celebration during columbus/indegenous day ?

If that's what the indigenous people whose name is used want. But please, let's not have a bunch of non-indigenous people deciding how indigenous people should be "honored". That's exactly how we got all these cringe-worthy mascots in the first place.
