The Beacon Hill Times reports on one catrepreneur's plans to convert a former bank branch at 80 Charles St. into a cafe/bookstore that would also have a room where people could sit and play with cats - separated from the other two rooms for book and coffee lovers who are allergic to or just don't like cats.
Boston's first attempt at a cat cafe, in Brighton, did not end well.

What are you, pussy? If you want a catfight, I'll give you a fancy feast.
PS. I'm being sarcastic. I don't have a dog in this fight. I'd rather hit the Pavement [cafe] than pay a premium to be around a bunch of crazy cats and their java jive.

As opposed to dogs, which unfortunately make routine appearances in all manner of outdoor dining establishments and other inappropriate locales around here.

Ok if I bring my pet rat? Don't worry, he doesn't bite. Aka "he's friendly" like everyone says when their off leash dog is giving my crotch unwanted attention in the park.
Sure!

Pet rats can be pretty cute.
Dogs at outdoor patios are pretty much required to be on-leash, but I'm sorry you got your crotch sniffed in the park by one.

Both cats and dogs groom themselves with their tongues including genitalia and rectum. Cats certainly spend a significant more time grooming due to their hunting instincts.
But a dirty sponge is a dirty sponge and using it more doesn’t change how clean it is. Heck, cats are even more prone to coprophagia than dogs…they’re just sneakier.
How about we all just agree that animal companions enrich and improve people’s lives?

I understand the desire to pick social and calm cats to get this off the ground but kind of sad to see this isn't a partnership with a rescue. Plenty of these cafes elsewhere have a partner org and all the cats are adoptable - it's a win-win as the cats get exposure to potential families and the cafe can offset some of the cat responsibilities to their rescue group.
Still, wish them well. That's a good location for Emerson/Suffolk/students who may be missing their furry friends at home.
Doomed to fail-- how much meat is there on a cat, really?

Motion to refer to this kind of business as a "cafe for cats" to avoid confusion.
