Several major research libraries have rebuffed offers from Google and Microsoft to scan their books into computer databases, saying they are put off by restrictions these companies want to place on the new digital collections.

The research libraries, including a large consortium in the Boston area, are instead signing on with the Open Content Alliance, a nonprofit effort aimed at making their materials broadly available.

While I hate the idea of banning people, Don "the zak" Saklad is now routinely posting information which really does not seem to fit with the format or tone here at UH, and (worse, if you ask me) he contributes nothing but these seemingly random posts -- i.e., he makes no meaningful (or even conversational) comments, and he pretty clearly doesn't read the site or he'd presumably notice that he is either way off-topic or hitting the wrong audience. Would it be so wrong to notify him that, if he continues to fail to follow the format and interests of the site and its readers, he will be blocked from posting? It seems to me that we can address any question of fairness by deciding that the same approach will be taken with anyone who repeatedly disregards these factors. In the event that posters who are blocked then resume posting under new user names, their posts (once recognized) would be deleted.

What do you all think? (I confess to not necessarily thinking through every eventuality here, so please don't attack me if you disagree with this idea. Instead, just say you disagree and, maybe, make an alternate suggestion of your own. Thanks!)
