Back in the early 90's, a toll taker started cursing me because I dared to pay part of my toll with five pennies.
But Brownie at the Natick toll plaza made up for them - always had a smile, always said hello to everybody.

Was he wearing the plastic gloves they wear to protect from all the bacteria on the money/coin they change? Haha. Good thing you said no, beyond the driving thing, you might have caught some nasty bacteria ebola virus if you survived the driving stoned bit. Haha. I bet even at the Mass Turnpike this type of thing doesn't happen that often these days. Who's stupid enough to risk a state pension/benefits for that? Well, maybe a toll worker. Massachusetts, you have to love it. And I am pro-hemp.
Sounds like the local beer

Sounds like the local beer distributor that was a teamsters shop I worked at. I think you are right in guessing that they had to be friends, because if they can't call your nickname to your face, that usually means they don't like you!
Courtesy Checks?

I think it's very interesting comparing the various toll booth personnel. I go through the Allston tolls maybe twice a week or so. Sometimes the taker says nothing and scowls at you. Sometimes you get a big smile with a "Hi! How are you this morning? Thank you!"
I wonder if the Pike has any random customer service checks, with unmarked riders going through tolls and, say, handing the worker 25 nickels, just to see the response? If not, they should.
Unless it would mean a raise in tolls to pay them, of course :-)
