I don't think she understands what's happening there. She asks: "Why can't they use the building for something else?". They are; the demolished part was the ugly 1970s addition and a featureless 1950s era building on Hawley St. The original 1912 building will remain as will the facade of the 1905 building at the corner of Franklin and Hawley. They removed the rear party wall to accommodate the high rise portion of the building that is going to go up next to the original building (which will become a retail/hotel complex).
