Menino to BC: Cut the doublespeak

Menino tells Banker & Tradesmen that maybe a bit of sophistry is involved when BC says it'll house all its undergrads on campus, then turns around and buys a high-rise apartment building on Comm. Ave. that isn't on campus.

Via Michael Pahre, who notes that BC officials are careful to talk about "university-controlled" housing rather than "on campus."

Mumbles used the word sophistry?

He tried. Nobody could understand him so it wrote it out.

Between BC and Menino, that's an average of 1.25 speak.

Arent the surrounding towns bitching because BC wants to build dorms on their campus? So instead they went and bought this. Colleges can never win in this town

Rather than parse the phrase "university housing" to death, can't we just be happy the students are going to be housed by a non-deadbeat landlord? The university will have direct accountability for its students eliminating the need to send out a BC AND Boston cruiser for weekend noise complaints in Brighton/Brookline/Newton. The fact that these students are going to be unable to disturb the neighborhood without repercussions from their school is what was needed.

Or we could play word games and cry that they haven't locked all of their students in the basement out of sight yet.

Locked in a basement? Then they can't use daddy's credit card to pay for booze, designer clothes, 50" flat screen TVs, and the ridiculous cab fares in this city (but that's another story).. Does anyone know how much students contribute to the local economy during the tourist off season? I'd be interested to know.

Michael Pahre reports BC paid $67 million for the apartment building.

A dorm that size? Probably yes.

BC must build a dorm more than 1,175 feet tall on the Brighton campus. Taller than the Hancock, taller than Trans National Place, it would be the tallest building in Boston.

BC must then name it after Menino.

Permits will fly through city hall quicker than shit through a goose.

That would also get rid of that pesky FAA issue involving the downtown tower.

But I think the 27 comment thread from eeka and friends would do me in if I said it outright.

Let's just say that it is a play on "World Trade Center" and leave it at that.

Spill it. Brave the eeka onslaught.

I figured they would name it the Menino building, and everybody would call it the Meninocock.

"Confrontation doesn't work," (Menino) said. "I'm saying to them, 'Let's work together and stop pitting people against each other.'..
"My argument to them is, 'Listen to the neighbors'," he said. "Don't ask people in Weston, Lincoln and Sudbury to make decisions for Brighton."
You have to give Mumbles credit, he managed to contradict himself in an on-the-record statement. If this guy was any dumber there would be a city employee assigned to water him.
