And Jenny Frazier didn't have to wait too long, because she realized there are AT&T stores that aren't on Boylston Street.

Oh, you want the phone activated, too?
Apple having issues

Apple is having issues keeping up with international demand for activation and apps downloads (both go through the iTunes servers to do so). I think most of those problems are worked out for most people now. The servers seem to have stabilized.
not cheaper

Just an FYI, the Globe and everyone else is tooting their horns about how it's "cheap" at $200.
Too bad that the data plan (which is required) costs $10/month more, and you're locked into a 2-year contract (also required.) So, $1640 over two years, and that's before all the various BS fees/charges/taxes.
Sigh

$10/mo more...but you are getting 3G network connection unlike the first iPhone.
2 yr contract? Who doesn't lock you in for 2 years these days if they're going to subsidize your phone?
All the various BS fees/charges/taxes? Name one that you wouldn't have to pay if you got an LG starter phone.
Sprint currently has their "everything" plan (web, text, phone) for 450 minutes at $69.99, the same price as the 450 minute AT&T iPhone plan. While they're giving you unlimited texting, AT&T is giving you rollover minutes. At the same time, AT&T's 3G is better than Sprint's.
Oh, and find me a comparable "phone" to the iPhone that is subsidized down to $200. Even Sprint's next Treo (Treo 800w) is $250 after subsidy/contract/etc.
Sprint IPhone clone

The Sprint Samsung Instinct is a pretty nice clone of the IPhone and right now goes for $129.
Works great in fact I am using it to post this message.
wrong, AT&T HSPDA is 1/2 the speed of EVDO Rev A

Wrong. Sprint's EVDO Rev A is 2.45-3.1 Mbps.
AT&T's network is HSPDA, and according to their own site, a maximum speed of 1.4Mbps.
Furthermore, EVDO is fully deployed, and has been for years- the Rev A rollout was ages ago, too. AT&T still hasn't rolled out 3G services.
Sit down, git.
$10/mo more...but you are getting 3G network connection unlike the first iPhone.
You're still being forced to pay $10/mo more. There's no option to stick to the old EDGE plan (which the device is fully capable of- 3G services are optional and can be disabled on the fly in the phone.)

Oops...sentence chop. That should have said, "AT&T still hasn't rolled out 3G services everywhere".
Slow your roll

EVDO Rev A at 3.1 Mbps didn't get put into a Sprint phone (HTC Mogul) until March 2008. According to Sprint's own site you can't get better than 1.4 Mbps still, either. Also, the AT&T claim of "1.4 Mbps" is "real world" experience and not the theoretical max which is set at 3.6 Mbps. Finally, HSDPA can hit rates of 14.4Mbps, but EVDO-A is stuck. Rev B is coming, but even then, the promised max there is still ~9Mbps. At the same time worldwide, countries like Australia are switching away from EVDO to HSDPA. They must know something you don't.
Back to Boston, Rev A isn't everywhere yet either. Of course, coverage for either RevA or HSPDA in the Boston area is a moot point, since they're both pretty much everywhere local.
Forced to pay or choose to pay, eye of the beholder. I don't want a Mogul. I want all of the other things that only come with the new iPhone and I want 3G speeds on my internet. I am just tired of it being presented as if they are trying to gouge users when you're getting a phone called iPhone 3G! and then you're going to cry about how you should be allowed to hobble it and make it an iPhone 2G to save $10/mo or act as if they're taking $10/mo more and not giving you anything different or better than a first-gen iPhone.
Shut out in Cambridge

My Treo 650 decided that earlier this week would be a good time to pack it in. When it starts up it never gets past the boot loader. Ah well, I'm a year past the end of my contract anyways and have bought a MacBook Pro since I had purchased the 650 anyways. The new Treo isn't Palm-based (at this point) and I refuse to buy something built on WindowsCE (er, Mobile).
Well, I tried at 9:30 AM at Boylston figuring the line campers would have come and gone...to find a line down to Fairfield...and then down Fairfield. Crazy, well, AT&T stores are selling them too and there's one down by Copley. Line there too. Damn these super smart Bostonians. Went to work phone-less.
Worked until 8P and figured I'd hit the Apple stores now that everyone had been in and out during the day. Nope. Line at Boylston...head to Cambridgeside, line there too. The AT&T store inside Cambridgeside told me that they had no more iPhones and none of the AT&T stores in New England did any more until they got more in.
Oh well, I haven't even tried yet today. I can survive another day or two before the urge to be social again arises.
