I decided to take the folding bike with me today on the Commuter rail, instead of riding the bigger bike to Davis.
Good choice.
I thought briefly about biking from West Medford to Davis because the train I wanted was 10 to 15 minutes late ... and now I'm glad I'm so bloody lazy and that old pink/orange siren song lured me astray for a DD Iced.
On the other hand, I'd love to see how the hut huts would handle Bike Friday or if they would try to tell me I couldn't take it on, etc.
...during commuting hours M-F. Something like 7AM-ish to 10-AM ish, and 4PMish to 7PMish (I don't remember, nor care, about the exact hours. The curious can easily find it on the MBTA website.)
Swirly's comment is a bit confusing, but I guess that either her larger bike is also folding, or else she was going to get on the Red Line after 10 am.
I own both a full size commuter bike and a folding bike. I can and do take my folder on all modes of transit at any time.
I had the folding bike with me today at West Medford station because I planned to take it aboard the commuter rail. When I saw the announcement that the Lowell Line commuter rail was delayed 10-15 minutes, I contemplated riding the folder from West Medford station to Davis, as that might mean getting to work sooner.
That's why I speculated that the Freedom Search Team would demand that I not take my folding bike aboard the Red Line at rush hour. Fridayers and Dahonians and Downtubists and Bromptoids all chat amongst ourselves in stations, and such arbitrary stupid on a random search day is not unheard of.
(I generally don't bring the folding bike to Davis because it doesn't lock very securely, doesn't haul two bags of groceries well, and it isn't worth dragging onto the red line when my work place is a block from a stop.)
Perhaps the MBTA Police should redeploy those officers into the stations to have a real effect on crime (like, say, preventing forcible rapes) instead of having a pretend effect on terrorism.

It's hit too close to home already! It's unbelievable how the American public at large has absolutely and totally allowed our civil liberties and rights to just be trampled on with no end, and to be thrown down the crapper. What fools the American public at large has been. Remember the old adage from Ben Franklin " S/he who willingly gives up liberty for temporary security and safety deserve neither". The only trouble is that I'll get screwed too.
To get onto another subject: Whether McCain or Obama becomes president of the United States, there's no stopping it. The American public at large is screwed..bigtime.
The one with a bomb around his torso. If you can refuse a search and leave, and you can walk to a nearby station, or take a bus to a nearby station, what is the point?
A link to what the T can and can't do was posted on the Davis Square page - apparently they can't search your person (including pockets), only your bags. Unless they can drum up "probably cause."
I remember a year or two ago, you could spot one of these 'surprise' checks because they'd park half a dozen cruisers...because they were too effin' lazy to walk their fat asses to the station.

My co-worker takes a folding bike with him most days, on the commuter rail from Worcester.

Preventing rapes doesn't give them any excuse to get grant money and shiny new truncheons from DHS.
Or how about preventing bicycle thefts at T stations?
