Second arrest for Jamaica Plain murder

A Roxbury man is scheduled for arraignment this morning on charges he helped kill a teenager last month.

Michael Gaines, 20, was arrested last night following a grand jury investigation into the Sept. 15 gunshot murder of Thomas Webb, 17, according to the Suffolk County DA's office. He is scheduled for arraignment this morning in Roxbury District Court.

Not long after Webb was gunned down, police arrested Elbert Newson, 19, of Dorchester after they found him in Roxbury "jogging, sweating, and breathing heavy, gasping for air."

Gaines was not unknown to police. In April, 2007, he was arrested for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after he allegedly threw bleach at a man - and kicked in his car window - during a traffic dispute in South Boston.

Innocent, etc.

Gaines pleaded innocent today; a judge ordered him held without bail, according to the Suffolk County DA's office, which provided the following account of what happened after the kid was shot (but not a motive for his shooting):

Boston Police responding to shots fired on Parker Street shortly after 9:00 p.m. on Sept. 15 found Webb suffering from four gunshot wounds, including wounds to his head and abdomen. Webb was transported to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead of his injuries.

Those officers became involved in a motor vehicle pursuit with a 2007 Nissan Maxima attempting to leave the scene. After maneuvering around the officers' cruiser, the Maxima sped up Parker Street toward Columbus Avenue before finally turning onto Weaver Way. During the pursuit on Weaver Way, the officers observed a black handgun thrown from the Maxima.

That .45 caliber Smith & Wesson semiautomatic was recovered, tested, and found to be a ballistic match with the rounds recovered from Webb's body, the prosecutor said.

The Maxima continued onto Academy Road before ELBERT NEWSOM (D.O.B. 12/9/88) and Gaines jumped out. The Maxima, still moving, rolled down Academy Road until it hit a tree. A .38 caliber revolver was recovered from the Maxima's interior and is consistent with additional projectiles recovered from the scene of Webb's homicide.

Remains under investigation (though it's hard to conceive of one that would warrant shooting a teenager four times in the head and chest).
