Union endorsements may not be as valuable as they were when unions represented a third of the workforce, but in Boston, a town that still has a strong union presence, they can help in the following ways:

1. Unions staffing phone banks and providing Election Day help.

2. Unions urging their members to vote for the candidate, which can be significant because generally speaking union voters have better turnout than non-union voters.

3. Unions running ads for their candidates.

If it is Unions that do business or are under the power of the mayor, I dont think many taxpayers WANT a candidate who is supported by unions like those, like police and firefighters. They like Flaherty because Menino has (finally) demanded something from them instead of giving them more and more benefits and pay. Still, Menino is loved by the unions because of all the deals he gives city employee unions.
I will vote for whichever candidate ISNT supported by the city, firefighter and police unions, since they are most likely to help keep Boston running efficiently.
