In the words of one of my good friends from my hometown in NJ: "Any diner that is not open 24hrs is a fraud."
I know State Rep. Fennell, who regular cooks my brunch at the Capitol Diner would disagree, but we used to call places closed by 3pm "Luncheonettes" even if they were in structures made by diner prefabricators such as O'Mahony, Worcester, Paramount, Fodero, Kullman, etc.

These were originally called "night lunches" and I agree that anything that isn't open 24 hours every day except X-mas and Thanksgiving is not a diner. Good for South Street Diner and good for Boston. If only there were more....

This all sounds wrong. The Blue Diner and South Street Diner are two different places that used to be next to each other. The Blue Diner closed down years ago and is now NEWS. The South Street Diner has been there all along, and as far as I remember, it was always 24 hrs. I've definitely been there for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a 3am snack.
Migrating Blue Diner
This is really confusing. When I worked on Lincoln Street, back in the early 80s, the diner that was actually in an old diner 1t 178 Kneeland was indeed the Blue Diner.
However, in about 1995 the owners relocated their restaurant to the building at 150 Kneeland, taking the name "The Blue Diner" with them, and the diner in the diner was opened as "The Boston Diner" (or "The Original Boston Diner," which it clearly wasn't.)
The Blue Diner later became News, and the Boston Diner became South Street Diner. But yes, the Blue Diner was indeed once in the actual diner at the corner of Kneeland and South.

but I was disappointed the one time I went there. It seemed to have some kind of a dress code, only they made an 'exception' for us. It was nearly empty. I don't know about others, but I prefer my late night meals is casual attire.

What happened was people who bought overpriced condos nearby started complaining that they were open 24 hrs and threatened to ruin one of the City's great institutions. You don't move next to a train and complain about the train being there. You don't move next to Fenway Park and complain there's a baseball stadium there. You don't move next to the South Street Diner and complain, after the fact, that it's there. If you don't like living near a diner, don't move near a diner!! Grr.

Yes they used to be 24 hour. I used to get lunch there occasionally when I worked close-by. Sometime in the past 2 or 3 years they changed their hours to only be open nights.
I used to like going there for lunch as it was a good place to chill on stressful day, and the staff were usually interesting. However, the food was was hit or miss depending on whom on the grill.

Like everything in Boston, SSD is wicked overpriced for Diner food.
Most Dinners you can get a hungry man, bottomless coffee and give a good tip from under $12. Last time I was there the meals were 10+ alone.
Beware the Minimum Purchase
can't go in for just a frappe... at least last time I was there, it cost less than the Minimum Purchase.
