State Transportation Secretary James Aloisi says the $160 million the MBTA said it needed to stave off cuts isn't enough to stave off fare hikes of 15% to 20%, the Globe reports.
Aloisi's statement (PDF), which explains why - starting with the extra $9.6 million the T will have to spend on Ride services after the contractor it had hired suddenly pulled out of the deal.

I will throw one out there to stoke up the T-riding UH masses.
The Senate President has gone well out of her way to say that there will not be a toll increase.
Does anyone want to hazard a guess as to: (1) whether she will come out as strongly, or at all, against a fare increase; and (2) why?

Yet the gas tax hasn't been increased in 10+ years, the Central Artery is free and street parking on land freed up by the Big Dig is free (as well as sidewalk parking that is also free like that in front of Pace in the North End).
Are we in the 1950s? Why is MA and Menino (who never uses his considerable leverage to advocate for public transit) discouraging public transit.
Why do we have to pay for increased sales tax to keep the tolls from going up but T fares still do?

Would much rather have a fare increase than cuts. I pay $59 monthly for a combo bus/subway pass, which seems awfully low. I agree that conductors should be stricter about collecting fares. They open all doors on the Green Line, then plead for everyone to come up and pay--why not just open the front door so they have no choice, at least when the cars aren't packed?

Yeah, but they're gonna do both anyway. This is the T we're talking about here.

I could use $60 back in my pocket.
The walk to work isn;t that far, and in the winter it's not that bad.
They do this, and I'll be canceling my monthly pass.
So, why didn't we hear about this from

Dan "any excuse to hold a press conference" Grabauskas first. I thought he was still general manager of the system, and not Aloisi.
