Deal to redevelop Postal Service land on Fort Point Channel collapses; jeopardizes T plans for new commuter-rail service

The Globe reports on the failure of complicated maneuvering to get the Postal Service out of its building next to South Station.
Mass. Transportation Secretary Jeff Mullan, however, doesn't see it quite like that. He tweets this morning:
Postal Service news presents opportunities for us regarding South Station capacity issues. We do not see it as a setback at all.

Conveniently located post office? This facility handles huge amounts of mail and has semi-trailers in and out all day long. It's a major traffic generator. A place to pick up your mail wouldn't occupy a postage stamp compared to this place.

The main hub in boston, and also has a PO over by summer street. It's also conveniently located only due to the fact that Dorecester Ave has been blocked off to the pubic, splitting western Southies connection with downtown. Trucks can easily get to it over the W Broadway and 4th Street bridges, but only because it's off limits to the public.

Sucks for me, and a lot of other south Boston residents.
I walk from Broadway to downtown every day, and am forced to detour along the other side of the four point channel, or take A street because apparently the government commandeered Dorchester Ave from the Gillette plant all the way to summer st. The walk is still nice and I’m not complaining about it, but it stinks that the post office has made no effort to link into the whole system.
Luckily Gillette was nice enough to see the value in opening up their land directly adjacent to the water.
Boston should force the post office to do the same. If security is a factor, they can just move the fence back five feet, allowing a path on Dorchester Ave, or possibly build a small pedestrian walkway right over the water (Much like the one at the children’s museum) .
There’s no reason why there should be a huge chunk of the harbor walk missing from Dot Ave all the way to where it picks up again behind the Fed Res Building.
