Where in the greater Boston area can a gal find a laptop bag (for a 12-inch) that:
-doesn't scream "There's a computer in here. Steal me!"
-is stylish
-has room for a few things besides just the computer
-at a store, so I can try it on to see if it's comfy to haul around

Levenger, in the Pru
Levenger in the Pru has had some that looked pretty good. I haven't been in there for months, though, so no guarantees.

Forget laptop bags
I found that the best "laptop bag" was a normal backpack with a neoprene "laptop sleeve" like the Shinza Zeroshock (www.shinza.com). All of the so-called "laptop bags" were too bulky, had too many design compromises, were overpriced, and, as you say, screamed "steal me".
I assume you're looking for something more fashionable than a backpack, but the same thing holds: Get yourself a briefcase/portfolio/whatever that you like, and use the ZeroShock case as protection.
The sleeve also helps when the danger to your laptop is IN your bag. I had a professor who kept his Powerbook and an MBox audio interface (which weighs only a few ounces) in his padded briefcase. He put it on a bookcase, and it tipped over and hit the floor - and the MBox had dented his Powerbook and cracked the LCD display. Neoprene mighta saved it. It did make a pretty picture, though: http://www.jay.fm/gallery/friends/jeff_screen
Laptop bags....
There is only one laptop bag for the fashionista:

I'm a dude, and I can still appreciate their aesthetic... And all the ladies I’ve recommended them to seem to be quite happy with them.
You can buy them locally too.

Lyss, although you can get them online only (I am so not sure that they have retail) Timbuktu makes gorgeous bags in all different sizes. I bought my 13 year old one for christmas this year and she is now officially the stylie-est slacker at her middle school. They are incredibly durable, and kick ass.

see if you can learn more there. I highly recommend them. I want one and I don't carry anything. I just want one.
Very best of luck in your search.
A little vanilla, but...
This may be a little stay-at-home-mom-ish, but I saw some nice bags in the L.L. Bean Traveler catalog last night. I wouldn't have looked at it at all if it weren't for the fact that I saw this post before leaving work yesterday.
The catalog had about three or four bags that were about 12" or 13" in size, almost about the size of an OLB (old lady bag), but more stylish.
