Not so Comcastic Internet service today

Jon Petitt ties together all those reports today of people being unable to access anything Google-related (from BlogSpot to GMail to that little search engine thingee). He quotes one person recounting a Comcast tech telling him the only fix is to switch browsers from Firefox to Internet Explorer. Bzzt, wrong answer, Mr. Comcast customer-service rep.

Tom reports a partial fix, at least for Firefox users.

Unquietsoul5 reports a Comcast rep said the problem was a flaky Comcast DNS server.

Steve Safran at Lost Remote: I contacted Comcast and they were less than helpful shall we say.

An eWeek blogger wonders if Comcast did it on purpose (but one reader wonders Tin Hat time?).

Abby: The outage today makes me realize how Google-centric my life has become.

Whole litany of complaints from LiveJournal users (plus this great question: So, is the MBTA down too?).

Boston Craigslist user reports that when he called to complain he couldn't get to a Google site, the rep told him to switch e-mail programs (More Craigslist comments).

More here.

Obnoxious Ed. note: We use neither Comcast nor Verizon - we've never had any reason to switch from Speakeasy. They cost a bit more, but they don't tend to have outages that keep you from getting to even obscure sites like Google.

On Blue Mass. Group, some people are complaining that they can't get to YouTube, which has a brand-new Deval Patrick commercial.

yep, i was having trouble with google and gmail on my mac at home. i had to actually yahoo something (first time ever). i actually closed my computer and walked away frustrated, and after i got into the kitchen i remembered that other search engines exist. sad.

i guess i know my neighbors have comcast now-- now i can set up my outgoing mail smtp dealie!

Oh! I thought it was just me! Of course I think everything is about me, so that's not really unusual.

I thought it was just me too! Thank goodness for my Universal Hub RSS feed! Now I can stop freaking out... for a while anyway.

This is why I love universal hub. I tried using google and gmail at home (firefox, winxp)and thought maybe someone had emailed me something prohbitively huge again and it was making things suck.

so not using IE at home -- i'll see if it is still broken tonight and if it is comcast won't like me calling. not one effin' bit.

I usually use Mozilla, couldn't get the Googlesphere to work with Safari either.

BTW, I use two wikis every day (check out pbwiki.com -- they're great, and free for the basic model!) and neither of them were available either (although, at 3:30, I can access them). I believe they're hosted in the SF area, so maybe the problem is regional....

I knew I should have blogged about this this morning... Stupid Comcast hating Google and YouTube. How am I supposed to keep myself entertained all day?!?

So I guess everyone knows that it isn't broken anymore. What a pain in the butt! No email, no access to my calendar. And I couldn't even watch the silly videos that get me through the day on YouTube (and everyone who links to them).
