Copper thieves strike mother lode at Verizon yard in South Boston

District C-6 reports that sometime over this past weekend, somebody broke into a Verizon yard at 649 Summer St. by the Marine Industrial Park and made off with $12,000 worth of copper wire.

It's the second time this month somebody broke into the facilty. On March 2, police say, five Verizon trucks were broken into and power tools removed.

Watches... I get it... cell phones... okay... But, say you make off with a load of copper wire.... Then what? Is there a stall at Haymarket where you can unload it? Do you melt it down to make copper bars?

Just in case, I inherit some copper wire some day, I'd like to know.

Scrap metal yards. This has been going on for years. Some places are looking the other way.

There are several scrap metal dealers in the area, some even in South Boston, who will take it. There are also places online where copper bars are now common. It used to be gold/silver/platinum bullion. Due to their current cost, other precious metals are becoming the next big place to invest. Palladium and copper are becoming very popular.

I remember reading a story in the New York Times about the rise of metal theft out west and in one of these states like Utah or Wyoming they had an incident where these guys stole several miles of wiring.

$12k of copper weighs? It's not like they are throwing this stuff over the fence.
