Patrick's statement on his sister and brother-in-law

Blue Mass. Group posts Patrick's statement on the drop-a-dime Herald story about his brother-in-law's criminal record.

... My sister and her husband went through a difficult time, and through hard work and prayer, they repaired their relationship and their lives. Now they and their children -- who knew nothing of this -- have had their family history laid out on the pages of a newspaper. Why? For no other reason than that they had the bad luck to have a relative who is running for governor. ItÂ’s pathetic and itÂ’s wrong. By no rules of common decency should their private struggles become a public issue. But this is the politics of Kerry Healey. It disgusts me. And it must be stopped. ...

Hub Politics, meanwhile, delivers the day's Republican talking point:

... Are we to believe that a guy like Deval Patrick, formerly on the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, former partner in the Boston law firm of Hill & Barlow, and former Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, wasn't aware of the fact that a convicted rapist has to register as a sex offender? (Heck, he was appointed to the Department of Justice by a sex offender.) ...

Dan Kennedy suspects who dropped a dime to the Herald (hint: it rhymes with Fealey Dampaign) and marvels at a Globe article that Democratic second banana Tim Murray, when serving as a public defender, represented people accused of crimes:

... Is this what the election is really going to turn on? Incredible. ...

Adam Reilly: Shame on Massachusetts if this garbage makes us elect Kerry Healey

Well I was beat to the punch on posting this but I will post the response I made to it in another thread:

"Good for him for calling the Healey campaign by its right name.

Not sure that I agree with the sister reconciling with her husband
because sexual assault's a dealbreaker to me, but they are consenting
adults that are clearly okay with what has happened."

"There is never enough time to do or say all the things that we would wish. The thing is to try to do as much as you can in the time that you have. Remember Scrooge, time is short, and suddenly, you're not here any more."

Horrifying all around, really, but I'm awestruck at the callousness of the Republican argument listed above, which is somehow completely and stupefyingly missing the point that hello, this woman was RAPED and her children did NOT KNOW until the information was PLASTERED ALL OVER THE FRONT PAGE OF THE PAPER. Hair-splitting aside, and I do wish Patrick had skipped dropping Healey's name just then, how'd you like for that to happen to YOUR sister?

I was just going to note that I just got an urgent email fron NASW (National Association of Social Workers) urging attendance at Sunday afternoon's rally in light of this development

...needs to get a grip. Even the fair-minded Blue Mass Group dropped them from their* RSS feed . Also, Citizen Charles Foster Kane entertainingly tracks HP's questionable writing, noting, as several other sources have, that HP doesn't always approve comments from dissenting voices.

(* an aside for language geeks: What pronoun should be used to refer to 'blue mass group' - its or their? Is it singular or a plural? Or are both acceptable?
