Maybe Boston isn't so bad after all

Sure, Boston's far from perfect, but compared to some other similar cities, we come off looking pretty good. As part of an overview of what's wrong with Philadelphia, the Pew Charitable Trusts compared eight cities, including our fair Hub. Read what they have to say (if you want to get your Philly on, the complete report is here).

Boston is clearly benefiting from its past glory, but the report shows where we are most vulnerable. High cost of housing and a really crappy mass transportation system are salient points made by the article's authors.

I know we are really hard on the T management, but when it costs over $700,000 for a 1500 sq foot condo in Brookline, we expect more for our money. Something other than the dangerous and uncomfortable Green Line Breda trains and bus like service would be a big plus.

Yes Boston is better than Atlanta, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh, but our high cost of living making those other places sound mighty attractive. Especially when our illustrious leadership includes the likes of "mumbles" Menino.

Cleveland? Detroit? C'mon. Is this the "left behind eastern city class" of the competition? If it weren't for mindless sprawl in Atlanta, I'd have a hard time believing Boston is better.

Put Boston up against Seattle, Portland, Sacremento, Cincinnatti or other similar-sized Metropolitan Statistical Area. Better yet, see where all the college grads and young townies are moving and do some rating of those places. I bet they are not heading to Cleveland!

but I'd take a closer look at Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and Austin.
