The poison-ivy-eating goats are back in Hyde Park, chomping away at the underbrush in the urban wild at the end of West Street. Well, except when they've had their fill or it's just too hot and they take a break, as they were doing around 4:30 p.m.

That is supposedly electrified enough to keep goats away but not enough to hurt a person. However, I'm doubting it's actually turned on. As you can see in the photo, one goat is touching the thing. And while I was there, one of the smaller goats (there seemed to be five altogether) used the fence to scratch himself along one side. Then he turned around and repeated the process on the other.

It's important to know that typically, an entire fence is not electrified. An extra wire (or wires), insulated from the rest of the fence, is used.

That's how the goats looked when I came by on Sunday. A little later, the largest and oldest goat got up, relieved himself, then made his way into the tall grass and started munching. All the others followed suit. It was like catching the end of a coffee break.
