Remember when lime prices skyrocketed amid talk of a gangster-organized black market?

Yeah, about that. Ari Ofsevit shows us the scene at Russo's in Watertown today - where the store bought too many limes and had to mark them down.

Limetastic!
More Dark and Stormys ... Yah!
If I could only reliably find that Polar Goslings Ginger Beer, that is ...
Did somebody mention Goslings Ginger Beer?
We just brought home a liter of the stuff from the West Roxbury Roche Bros.
did you get limes and...
...vodka? Moscow mules are the best thing.
10 for $1 every week at
10 for $1 every week at Haymarket.
Russo's is basically Haymarket in the burbs
And open every day of the week. If they had a store in Cambridge they'd do land office business. But the store is only a small part of their wholesale business.
Also, anyone remember the old, old Russo's when it was maybe 2000 SF and jammed together? That was pretty cool. I wish it was closer to me …
I do! Back when the doors
I do! Back when the doors where the nuts and candies are used to be the entrance. I worked there through high school. It used to get so packed! Funny how they expanded like 3 times, built 3 parking lots and a street, and they are still crazy packed almost all the time!
P.S. Tony Russo is the coolest, you can still see him working in the store, putting fruit and veggies out.

Bite your tongue
Russo's is not Haymarket West. First, Watertown is the "burbs"? Yeesh. The produce at Haymarket is over-ripe/damaged/couldn't be sold on shelf produce. Sure, some of it ends up decent but most of it is a day from death. That's why after the market closes for the weekend, they just leave it in the street to get shoveled into dump trucks and composted. It's already halfway to a good rot by then.
Russo's is a produce stand grown large. It's all fresh and well-kept so that most of it stays good for me for at least a week. Prices are super reasonable like Haymarket. That's where I'd draw the line on similarities though. The deli counter has a lot of good Italian meats and the bakery has really grown into its new space so even if you're not the first one through the door you can get absolutely fresh-out-of-the-oven loaves.
i dont think..
i dont think i've ever been in Russos when it hasnt been packed. I get pushed my more old ladies in russos than in the T
Mojitos and Margaritas!
Just the thing for gloomy weather!
oh those were dark, flavorless times
Here in Mexico I think we got to about 40 or 45 pesos ($2.50-3ish) a kilo, which was shocking, particularly for something that's essentially a staple in most households (and all taco stands).
We've been back down to more reasonable prices for quite some time now. The more fru-fru supermarkets don't generally go above 15 or 20, and bless the sale days when I take an inappropriate amount home for 3 or 4 a kilo.
largely irrelevant anecdote, but there you go.
