Man! More manhole madness today
By adamg on Wed, 08/01/2007 - 9:17pm
Manhole explodes this afternoon on Needham Street near Rte. 9 in Newton (two blocks from Margalit, who is starting to wonder what the deal is with her neighborhood's karma).
Tires blown at coverless manhole on Nonantum Road in Brighton this morning.

...And I just turned on my TV to find out that a bridge collapsed in Minneapolis. Sweet God, Massachusetts, pay up that $17 billion and fix this stuff before more people get hurt.
MN Bridge...
Bridge Collapse Slideshow.
Unbelievable; if I didn't know what this was I'd guess they were stills from the Spielberg remake of War of the Worlds. 3 dead so far. Let's hope that's all.
And how about our Longfellow Bridge
For the past few days, Universal Hub has been carrying an ad from the Pioneer Institute, touting its new report on the Longfellow Bridge and the state's general lack of maintenance of its capital assets
The report is well worth reading: Save the Longfellow Bridge
Put the MA back in MAINTENANCE
I heard about this horror from my father, the roads guy. He was totally shocked because Minnesota is one of the BETTER states for bridge building and roadway maintenance. Not like those states he refuses to do business with as a consultant - like MA!
I believe the subject line was "you're next".
It took a similar loss in Washington - the Hood Canal Bridge - before that state STOPPED THE YEAR TO YEAR TO YEAR DISCRETIONARY FUNDING OF MAINTENANCE BULLSHIT that plagues everything in MA. You CANNOT have a comprehensive program of upkeep and repair and inspection of infrastructure if you don't know what money is going to be there to carry out systematic and continuous care and what strings will be attached until mid-summer each year. Can't can't can't!
How many people are going to die in what god awful preventable bloodbath before Massbackwardchusetts gets a clue that this DOES NOT WORK in 21st century reality with complicated multi-year needs? Gas taxes should be raised and the MA Constitution changed to permit funding of infrastructural maintenance from dedicated funding schemes that the legislature is not allowed to loot on a whim or use to fund yet another tax reduction or pet project without raising other taxes. Otherwise, keep rubbernecking because this is only the opening act with a few "buskers" (injured drivers here and there) - more fun yet to come and close by!
Agreed...$ for infrastructure maintenance needs to be dedicated
Infrastructure maintenance is one of those government programs that doesn't have a constituency until something goes wrong. It should be funded in a way that protects against being looted for new projects or unrelated programs.
AMEN, Bob.
AMEN, Bob.

Report from somebody who lives right next to the bridge
35W just came down right in front of my house.
