Watertown boots ADL for refusing to use words "Armenian" and "genocide" in same sentence

Lisa Williams reports the town council has rescinded its support for the ADL's "No Place for Hate" program because the ADL won't acknowledge that more than 1 million Armenians were victims of genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Empire.

Somebody tell me if I am wrong, but is the issue here that the ADL won't call the Armenian atrocities "genocide" because the Holocaust is considered a singular event and is considered to be the only "genocide" ever perpetrated? I have heard this before but wonder where the ADL stands on this. I would have to disagree with them if that is the case. Having said that, Armenian Americans seem to have developed an identity of victimhood around the terrible crimes committed against them by the Turks that drowns out all other aspects of their sense of culture and history. Are actual Armenians living in Armenia as obsessed about this? How healthy is it to allow the criminal to shape the image one presents for public consumption? This situation certainly makes Armenian Americans appear to be a little hysterical.

Well, I guess if Wikipedia says it everyone must be in agreement. In fact there are some in the Jewish community who argue that the Holocaust was the only atrocity in history worthy of the term "genocide" and that may be where the ADL is coming from on this. Doesn't mean I think they are right necessarily.

The ADL has no trouble using the word "genocide" in connection with other mass murders, such as Darfur, but for some reason considers what happened before World War I a matter for Armenians and Turks to jointly come up with a name for.

... asking Nazis and surviving Jews to jointly come up with a name for what happened in World War II.
