Jocelyn asks:
Anyone have a line on where I can buy a new shovel? We ended up breaking two of them last week trying to shovel up the ice and I'm assuming we'll get a little bit of snow before we turn to spring.

1. Currently, Accuweather is predicting only one day in the next month getting below freezing.
2. Don't use a snow shovel for ice. Buy a metal "coal" shovel

Those 45 day forecasts are pure bunk.
Especially since the NWS high for Boston is 28 Sunda and 30 Monday. I believe those are below freezing.
Longer range forecast is … around normal, and normal is below freezing (for lows, anyway).
Anyway, Accuweather slop is what you get if you defund the NWS.

Weather.gov has everything you really need and isn't floating in a cesspool of advertising.
I'm really hoping we don't lose it and have to start paying for substandard privatized forecasts.

If you buy a shovel this weekend, you're guaranteeing we won't get more snow.
Please go buy one!

i usually go to the local hardware store. Are they out? i would advise picking up good ice copper as well. The longer handle and smaller blade make it more effective at breaking up the ice, than a metal shovel.

Sometimes it better to leave an icy sidewalk as is and take the ticket from the city vs breaking multiple shovels.
That doesn't happen in my neighborhood of course...
That's an ableist hot take

You don't want to worry about breaking a shovel and want to roll the dice on a ticket but screw anyone who deigns to walk on your sidewalk after crappy weather?
I'm glad I'm not your neighbor

Anecdotally: we went by the Somerville Home Depot a week or so ago and asked about snow shovels, and not only did they not have any more in stock, but they said they’re not expecting to get replenished this season, so that’s it for this winter.
Haven’t checked other places yet, but pickings may be slim…

Probably a lot cheaper than hardware stores and the shovels are fine. I think they might even have them year-round although with only a few in the summer. Occasionally they are helpful for yard work, etc.
