Snow at Oak Grove in February

We've had quite enough of this, thank you very much. Feb. photo by Rich.

Starting tonight, the T will be shutting down the Orange Line between Wellington and Oak Grove starting at 8:45 p.m. at night so workers can get the tracks ready for winter - except for Friday and Saturday nights, when service will run as usual.

You may recall that particular stretch of Orange Line proved particularly troublesome in the winter of our discontent. Workers will be installing heaters along the third rail and at switches to prevent the tracks from turning into a glacier again, in a $12.7 million project, MassDOT reports.

Fresh snow at Oak Grove on the Orange Line

Rich got to Oak Grove around 6:30 a.m., just in time to see tracks remain unshoveled, which is one of the reasons the T is still just running that single shuttle train up and down that one track between Oak Grove and Wellington, causing grief for commuters like Beth Chaplin at Malden:

At Malden Sta at 7:15am; SB "shuttle" train too full to get on. Now heading NB to OG so I can circle back to Wellington.

Major delays on the Red Line this morning. At Quincy Center, a train died and one car filled with smoke. Then the doors wouldn't open. Kerstin Haley reports:

People busted open the windows to let people out.

The Orange Line is also having its problems - once you could get to the trains. JTGard6306 reports:

Oak Grove is literally biggest disaster ive ever seen in my life. Accidents, fights, ZERO spots. AVOID!

How else to explain the apparent time dilation on the Orange Line this morning, in which the T is reporting only "minor delays" due to signal issues at Oak Grove. Or as Joe explains:

Aaaaaand to summarize, sat in my seat at 6:59 at Oak Grove, arrived Ruggles 7:58.

An inbound Orange Line train didn't even make it out of the starting gate at Oak Grove early this morning. Somewhere on the Ashmont branch of the Red Line, an outbound train felt that disturbance in the Force and went over to the dark side.

O'DonnellTransit Police report arresting a Wakefield man on charges he repeatedly punched an MBTA bus driver in the face this morning at Oak Grove after the driver wouldn't let him board because his CharlieCard didn't have enough funds.

Police say the driver, 58, was letting passengers board his Route 131 bus at Oak Grove around 6:50 a.m. when Ryan O'Donnell, 19, stepped into the bus:

O'Donnell tapped his Charlie Card on the fare box which indicated insufficient funds to cover the fare. The bus operator explained this to O'Donnell who became belligerent and demanded to ride for free. The bus operator refused and after withstanding O'Donnell's verbal tirade requested he exit the bus. As O'Donnell was exiting the bus he turned and spat at the bus operator. Subsequent to that a struggle ensued where the victim/T employee was struck with a closed fist multiple times in the face causing injury and severe bleeding from his nose.

O'Donnell is now scheduled for arraignment in Malden District Court on a charge of assault and battery, police say.

Innocent, etc.

Karen checks in this morning from Oak Grove:

Was about to say this was the least problematic Orange Line commute in weeks. Then the train wouldn't move.

Eric Wildman adds:

What you don't want to hear on the Orange Line: "Sorry guys, this train just won't move, you will need to use the other train."

Donut and Donuts

Matt Kurkowski spotted the construction at Oak Grove on the Orange Line:

Oh my God, IS DONUT & DONUTS REOPENING?? (Still best name ever.)

Dave Bonner tweets another donut stand at the Oak Grove T stop has closed:

... sign said business was too slow. ...

Tony tweets:

Just saw an MBTA employee dump the metro paper recycling bin into a trash can at Oak Grove. Why do they pretend to recycle? Ugh.

The T does a better job of recycling old Metros at the inbound platform on the Orange Line at Haymarket: They use bundles of Metros to sop up all the water that keeps draining into the station - and to prop up an orange cone atop the slippery spot the water creates.

Bus stragglers at Oak Grove

Jen Stewart took the above photo at the Oak Grove Orange Line station this morning. She reports that it wasn't bad enough that the T bus driver told everybody to get out in the street, way away from the station. When the refugees then straggled up the road because the T didn't shovel the sidewalks, the bus driver honked at them for getting in his way.

Jen Stewart asks:

Nothing says 'Summer on the Orange Line' quite like being stuck next to a sweaty, smelly drunk who is trying to grope your thigh, wouldn't you say? ...

By adamg - 6/12/07 - 1:38 pm

They park like this.

By adamg - 3/29/07 - 10:01 am

Jen Stewart reports the answer to the riddle is six:

Two to pass out brochures, and four to stand with their hands in their pockets, staring longingly at the Dunkin' Donuts stand 5 feet away.

Some rolls of paper towels:

... [T]he 136 bus this morning had over 15 seats that were full of dirty water puddles, rendering them unusable. Let me repeat that: more than 15 seats were unusable. ...
