The City Council yesterday approved a request by Councilor Ricardo Arroyo (Roslindale, Hyde Park, Mattapan) to look into how to get the city to build dog parks south of the Fenway, where he said dog-owning residents deserve the same facilities as those in the South End, the North End, Dorchester and other neighborhoods that already have dog parks. The Boston City Council voted today to try to bypass a special election for mayor should Marty Walsh resign before March 5. The issue now goes to Mayor Walsh - who has said he supports the idea - and then the state legislature, which would have to approve the change in the state-issued city charter. Read more.

City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan), hopes to start the ball rolling on getting the state Legislature to let Boston not have to hold three and possibly four mayor elections this year should Marty Walsh become labor secretary before March 5 - Covid-19 just makes that too damn risky to voters, not to mention expensive. The City Council today voted unanimously to bar police and other city agencies from using facial-surveillance software except for specific criminal investigations - and even then only if the data is not generated by city-owned cameras. Read more.

City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo (Roslindale, Hyde Park, Mattapan) writes that it's time for the BPDA to stop delaying action on Roxbury Prep's proposal to turn the old Clay Chevrolet on Belgrade Avenue into a new high school, that Roxbury Prep students deserve a modern high school and that a school literally in front of a commuter-rail stop and with several bus lines running past it will not gridlock local streets.

Last month, Arroyo replaced Tim McCarthy, who had opposed the school.

On the night of the preliminary election in September, outgoing District 5 City Councilor Tim McCarthy tried to rev up supporters of his aide and would-be successor Maria Esdale Farrell, who won a slot in the November final by coming in second against Ricardo Arroyo to represent Hyde Park, Roslindale and Mattapan. At a candidate forum at the Blue Hills Collaborative tonight, six candidates for the District 5 (Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale) seat being given up by Tim McCarthy agreed in broad strokes on almost everything, differing mainly on the specifics of how they would accomplish their goals on specific topics. Mayor Marty Walsh this week endorsed Annissa Essaibi-George for re-election to one of the four at-large City Council seats up this fall.

In District 5 (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan), at-large Councilor Michelle Wu, who lives in Roslindale, endorsed Ricardo Arroyo for the seat being vacated by district Councilor Tim McCarthy. Read more.

At a candidate forum last night, two candidates for the District 5 (Roslindale, Mattapan, Hyde Park) city-council seat - Ricardo Arroyo and Mimi Turchinetz - repeatedly proclaimed themselves progressives who would go far beyond constituent services and help other progressives on the council tackle issues from systemic racism to the climate crisis.

Maria Esdale Farrell, who works as an education aide to current Councilor Tim McCarthy, said idealism is all well and good but that she would largely stick to McCarthy's current focus on bread-and-butter local issues, such as potholes and crime. Alkia Powell, who currently works in the Mayor's Office of Economic Development, agreed with Arroyo and Turchinetz - and Farrell - on many issues, but did not call herself a progressive. Read more.

Ricardo Arroyo, whose father Felix D. Arroyo, and brother, Felix G. Arroyo, both served as at-large city councilors, announced today he's running for the District 5 (Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale) council seat held by Tim McCarthy since 2013. McCarthy had no opposition in the 2017 election.
