Word just went out. The Newton Beacon reports that with the teacher strike about to enter its tenth school day, some Garden City non-profits and businesses are offering programming for students.

Middlesex Superior Court Judge Christopher Barry-Smith today ordered the striking Newton Teachers Association to pay $25,000 for not returning to work today after declaring the union in civil contempt for disobeying his order to return to work today and calling for increasingly steeper fines over the next few days: Read more.

As striking members of the Writers Guild walked picket lines outside, and as a plane pulled a protest banner up above, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav gave the commencement speech at Boston University's Nickerson Field today. Read more.

Workers at the Starbucks at 1948 Beacon St. in Brighton struck this morning after they say the shop's owners refused repeated requests to fix problems that finally cascaded into water coming out of ceiling lighting fixtures, streaming down "onto the floors, espresso machines, counter spaces and the partners themselves" for several hours yesterday.
