Update: Haverhill Police report 911 is back up.

Reports are coming in from police and fire departments across the state that the 911 system that connects you to your local first responders isn't working, so if you're having an emergency and 911 doesn't work, you'll have to look up your city's or town's direct numbers.

Boston fire boxes always work

An important message from Local 718 - Boston's fiyahfightas.

Update, 12 p.m. Mass EMA reports continued sporadic problems with wireless 911 calls.

State Police report that a problem at a Louisiana-based data network that had knocked wireless 911 service off the air in Massachusetts and other states overnight has been fixed. CenturyLink first noticed the problem, which it described only in vague terms, yesterday afternoon.

SHOTS FIRED....

Shots fired, shotspotter on, 911, what's goin on?
Tires squeal, bullets fly, oh God I hear a baby cry!

Sirens wail, an old woman frail... falls down...her heart begins to fail.
Police, ambulances, a man, blood on his face, will they live?
Maybe... God's grace.

Curious neighbors gather round, some just stare at the ground.
In some houses lights go out. Now I hear a young man shout
"He shot my brother! I'll find him quick!"...The anger in his face, makes me sick.

Globe: Retraining, maybe discipline for 911 worker who didn't dispatch anybody to a Hyde Park beating immediately despite several calls from neighbors:

The call taker, who was not identified, knew the man was bleeding and needed help, but categorized the call as lower priority because the assailant was gone, Driscoll said.

Check this article out about the decline of Irish immigration and its effect on the community in Boston. Apparently, Irish numbers have dwindled in Boston, especially since 911.

It makes me kinda sad because I've always thought that the Irish influence in Boston was one of its most important cultural attractions.
