District 2 Boston City Councilor Bill Linehan is proposing a "No Tow" street-cleaning program for South Boston, according to a press release issued by his office quoted on the Fort Point Blog.

City Councilor Bill Linehan and the Boston Transportation Department will hold three community meetings in South Boston to discuss the Councilor’s proposed ‘No Tow’ Street Cleaning Program. Under the program, towing will be suspended and violators will receive a $100 ticket in the South Boston neighborhood.

While it might be April Fools day, the city of Cambridge isn't joking about the date. Loudspeaker trucks, meter maids, and tow trucks were out in full force today throughout Kendall Square and other "Tuesday" parts of Cambridge to herald in one sign of spring's arrival: Street Cleaning.

This past Saturday I volunteered as part of Boston Shines and the Beacon Hill neighborhood cleanup. The City of Boston posted signs on some of the Hill's dirties streets, including Phillips, Anderson, Irving and Garden, to ask cars to move the day of the cleanup.

Many owners moved their cars, though I imagine more out of fear that they would be towed. Whatever the reason, this allowed a street cleaner to get to the curb on those streets. I must say, it's amazing how well the street cleaner can do when it can reach the curb.
