Transit Police report arresting a man on a commuter-rail train bound for last night's festivities in Salem after, they say, he escalated from threatening other riders to fist fights to pulling out a knife when one rider asked him to knock it off.

Prevailing sentiment in progressive haunts is “2016, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.” Between a stressful election season, acts of terror, and the crisis in Syria, many of us will be glad to see the calendar page turn on Sunday night. Still, to every cloud there is a silver lining, and at least when it comes to tackling climate change in the US, Massachusetts was a bright spot amidst the clouds of 2016.

A town selectman from Pembroke, wants to change the date Halloween is celebrated in Massachusetts, from October 31, to the last Saturday in October.

The state representative for Pembroke, Josh Cutler (D-Duxbury) filed the bill to change the date, but he is not fully convinced it's the right idea.

WBZ reports a Salem woman was injured when she fell three stories down a chute into a trash compactor - which activated and crushed her leg. Seems she was helping a guy try to retrieve his keys, which had fallen down the chute:

A Salem man sentenced to five years in federal prison for a scheme in which he'd go around Home Depot stores collecting stuff in a shopping cart then "returning" them at the returns desk was charged today with pulling the same stunt several times earlier this year. Read more.

Theo Jansen's Strandbeests - Wallace & Gromit's World of Invention Episode 1 Preview - BBC One

Boston Magazine reports the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem is bringing Dutch artist Theo Jansen's "strandbeests" (beach animals) to the Boston area - with one-day exhibitions of them at various locations, including City Hall Plaza and Dewey Square, next month.
