One of the geese that frequents Jamaica Pond hit the salad bar this afternoon while one of the rolling Brookline eyesores that keeps winding up at the pond just sat nearby, taking up space.

Goslings on East Berkeley Street in the South End

If you raced into J.J. Foley's and announced you'd just seen all these geese waddling down East Berkeley Street, you think they'd believe you or order you out for having already had too much to drink? Roving UHub photographer Monty C. might have wondered that this morning, except it was too early to duck into the South End bar.

Heron with a fish snack at Jamaica Pond

The heron stood mostly still at the water's edge along the Pinebank side of Jamaica Pond today, only its neck swiveling as it scanned the water. Then, suddenly, it went into a crouch, like a cat about to pounce, took a couple of steps to the left and speared the water, coming up with a quickly devoured canape. Read more.

Ducks, geese and coots in water at otherwise frozen Jamaica Pond

Geese, ducks and coots congregated in what appeared to be the last remaining bit of open water on Jamaica Pond, at the north end, this morning. Some birds remained aloof: Two swans seemed to prefer their space out on the ice rather than sharing it with their cousins, as did a flock of seagulls. Read more.

Sophy Tuttle has quite the tale of what happened on her normally sedate Medford side street this morning when a drunken college student, on learning Tuttle's downstairs neighbor had packed three dozen chickens, a number of geese and ducks and an undetermined number of pigs in a trailer parked in the street, got a hammer and whacked the trailer open (all the while screaming "I know what I'm doing, my girlfriend goes to Tufts!"), releasing all the birds into the street (the pigs just stayed where they were):

I was woken up at 4:30 to the cops banging on our door screaming "Are these your f*%$ing chickens?!?!" "Get the F*%^ out here and get them!". My neighbor runs out and starts screaming at the kid. My next door neighbors and the farmer and his wife now spend the next 2 hours chasing chickens and ducks allll over my neighborhood, all while screaming like it's not 5am. While the kid is sitting in cuffs on my porch, the cop says "are you a college student?", to which the moron replies, "yea, I go to college". The cop replies, "that's why then. All you college kids are f*&%ing idiots". My roommates and I are standing on the porch, watching about 5 seasoned police officers chase chickens on a suburban street at 5 am and trying not to laugh, because, you know, they have guns.

A goose in Boston's Public Garden

Winged menace gives you the eye.

Boston city councilors will take a gander at a gaggle of ideas to deal with geese and the crap they leave behind.

At a hearing today, councilors heard suggestions that included fining people who feed them, having parks workers and volunteers coat goose eggs with oil, which kills the chicks but fools the mother goose so she doesn't lay more eggs - and buying more umbrellas for city parks workers with which to find off angry geese when they try to grab the eggs to coat them in oil. Geese in Hyde Park

Blame Canada geese: The honey badgers of the avian world.

Councilor Annissa Essaibi-George refuses to duck the issue any longer: Boston has become infested by Canada geese that befoul our parks, sidewalks and waterways and chase after other animals, little children and even small adults. Read more.
