WBZ

In general, I like listening to 'BZ on the way to work - they can do a good job with breaking news (Danvers) and they always let me know what's on the front page of the day's Globe.

This morning, they faced a tough decision. Should they send ace reporter/poet Carl Stevens out to cover a gang-related double shooting in Roxbury (one dead, one wounded) or a store on Newbury Street that had a window smashed this morning?

Guess which one they chose?

Jesse Noyes reports that Channel 7 is making Matt Lorch the anchor of the 10 o'clock news on Channel 56 - which is of interest to people who just can't say "Lorch" often enough, if not Amy at Pasquinade.

Also, the new Gary LaPierre on WBZ is some guy from a New York station (who did grow up in Massachusetts, though).

Channel 4 finally admitted that CBS4Boston was stupid, announcing it's going to call itself WBZ again. John Daley notes:

Now that that's settled we learn that Channel 7 has been cleared to absorb Channel 56, which should add up to Channel 63. But I don't think that's how it works.

Anybody who's followed my writing (yeah, both of you) knows I don't much care for Jon Keller. But give the man his due: He has Boston roots. On his daily gaseous exhalation on WBZ radio this morning, he twice referred to a certain murder trial as being "down the Cape." Something to talk about around the bubbla.

On Irregahdless, Andrew Teman ranks local anchorwomen on their hotness (which, of course, leaves open the question of who will be the first to rank the anchormen, which leads to the question of who remembers the ill-fated pairing of the Anchorhunk and the Anchorette as an attempt to combat the Anchorcouple way back when).

David Scott chronicles "the rapidly-aging and fastly-fading" Bob Lobel's performance on Sunday night's "Sports Final" - was he really giggling over the way that guy collapsed at the finish line of the Chicago Marathon?

Pow!Confined to bed and couch last week with a cold, Amy left her TV on channel 7:

... And I was struck with one constant emotion.

I really, really, really hate Matt Lorch.

Not in a personal way, though I think if I knew him he'd bug me. But I really despise his style of anchoring. I hate the way he speaks, I hate his uber-gelled hair, I hate the fact that channel 7 canned Chris May to hire this Lorch fellow. ...

David Pye, meanwhile, confesses his undying, and perhaps unhealthy, love for Liz Walker.

Channel 4 will Webcast election results with Jack Williams and a panel of local reporters and bloggers. Blue Mass. Group and Hub Politics will represent. Starts at 8 p.m.

Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?

David Scott wonders whether Ted Johnson still has a contractual deal with Channel 4, based on the softball questions gently lobbed him by Bob Lobel:

... Lobel ended the piece from the studio with a meandering, babbling public service announcement about the "moral of the story" and urging viewers to make a call if they feel threatened.

By adamg - 7/19/06 - 1:42 pm

Sure, it's no Matt Amorello crack, but one of our channel-4-watching correspondents couldn't believe her ears last night while watching Bob Lobel do the sports:

He ended his story on last night's game saying "Lester The Molester is now 5-0 with tonight's win." I actually rewound the DVR to ensure I heard it correctly.

Jon Keller: Not all bloggers are nuts:

The blogosphere has an image of being a gathering place for all kinds of nuts. But is that reputation really justified?

John Daley notes how WBZ 1030 has broadened the definition of "local" news.

Elliot Abrams, who usually does the morning weather forecasts on WBZ, always seems to do one forecast that is loaded with as many puns as possible. Today, for some reason, he did a medical-themed forecast. And he managed to slip in a line something like:

You could argue that Sunday will not be as nice, but that would be yer analysis.

If only WBZ archived these!

Wicked Good Conferencers recall the late traffic reporter, who not only did the traffic, he saved lives.

Neal:

... I remember listening him on Dave Maynard's morning show when I would get ready to go to school when I was young, he always had good entertaining banter with Maynard during his traffic reports. ...

Spatch:

... What a great man he was. ...

Sure, some people might consider Jon Keller a gasbag (hmm, like who, I wonder?), but Chris Cagle says you really have to compare him against the competition, like Andy Hiller or John Henning. And when you do that, there's really no competition:

John Keith notes that even though Boston Police were fairly quick to release news of those five shootings in an hour on BPDNews, neither the Globe's nor the Herald's Web sites had anything until at least midnight, when the early Herald press run started and they posted a print story. Channel 4 did have something up by 11 p.m., along with a brief mention of a fatal stabbing on Hyde Park Avenue that BPDNews has yet to acknowledge.

By adamg - 3/20/06 - 8:55 am

Channel 4 has the initial details on the shooting at 470 Mass. Ave., which left one dead.

Props to Channel 4 for being the first with the most on the story. I went to them as soon as I fired my browser up at work, after listening to Carl Stevens report on WBZ-AM on the shooting.

By adamg - 3/8/06 - 7:49 pm

Chris Cagle welcomes the Channel 4 commentator to the blogosphere, then shows him how blogs are different from the MSM - readers can talk back and you can't stop them.

Oh, speaking of Channel 4, Dan Roche has a Red Sox blog - and unlike Keller's, his RSS feed actually works.
