The WBZ talk-show host and Lowell Sun columnist died yesterday (WBZ 's story).

Spatch sighs and recalls both Sully and David Brudnoy:

Through WBZ, Paul Sullivan's family has released a statement on his battle with cancer:

... At this point we have decided to end medical treatments for Paul's cancer and focus on his comfort and quality of life. He will be in the hospital for the foreseeable future receiving hospice care. We feel he will be most comfortable here at Saint's Memorial Medical Center in Lowell, the city where he spent so much of his life.

It's pretty cool that Carl is doing video reports now (like this one on the Storrow Drive tunnel), but you really need to splurge and get him a camera with image stabilization (they're not all that expensive anymore) - unless you're trying to give your viewers vertigo.

Wellesley Crash Closes 95, Severely Injures 1.

Listen, kiddos, the only people who call that stretch of road "95" are tourists from Illinois and anal-retentive federal highway administrators. What's next? A story about Warchester?

You may have seen the stories (Globe, WBZ) about the deployment to Iraq of a certain Massachusetts Army unit that dates to before the Revolution and that was commanded by Paul Revere at the battles of Lexington and Concord back in the day.

See how many local and NBC celebs (one of whom just died) you can spot in this 1990 promo for WBZ's Evening Magazine, posted by dcbatwing:

Jessica Heslam was there last night:

... After the tribute, Sullivan's colleagues, friends and family lined the station's long corridor and applauded Sullivan as he and his wife left arm-in-arm.

WBZ, which broke the story of the ventilation building converted into a driving range, says South Boston, near where that tunnel collapsed. The Globe, playing catch up, says it's near Logan Airport in East Boston.

Who's right? Or are there two of them? In any case, shouldn't the turnpike authority be opening it (them?) to the public? Might be a way to recoup some of those overruns.

Just because you can rhyme "Moss" with "toss" and "sod" with "God" doesn't mean you should.

SlimeMaster JKI hope we never learn that there were ratings considerations behind yesterday's awkward, invasive blog post on the press conference by Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife to discuss her recurring breast cancer. Because as someone who's lost relatives to that awful disease, the notion that some slick commentator on the make might exploit it for ratings gain is way off the scale of acceptability.

Ever wonder what poet of the airwaves Carl Stevens looks like? The 'BZ reporter files a video report on lottery fever in Brighton today:

I quickly ignore John Daley's attempt to get local bloggers not to use rhyme to discuss city councilor John Tobin's proposal to appoint a city poet laureate.

Besides, we don't even need to conduct a search. We got yer Boston poet laureate right here.

Channel 4 is asking local journos to start calling it WBZ instead of CBS4Boston. Like they really need to be prompted? Anybody even remember what the Garden was briefly called?

Of course, guys, might help if you changed cbs4boston.com to point to www.wbztv.com instead of the other way around (hmm, how long before the TV station muscles the radio station out of www.wbz.com?).

At 8:13 this morning, WBZ's Ed Walsh said something like:

And now your Subaru Dealers of New England All-Wheel Traffic Report - brought to you by Toyota.

You know those time tones WBZ-AM has played at the top of the hour every hour for the past 60 years or so - and no matter whether it comes in the middle of a commercial or promo? If you have a Linux computer and know what to do with some C code, you can synchronize your computer to WBZ time.

Via Spatch, who notes the final tone now always comes eight seconds after the hour:

Mike Mennonno urges David Robichaud to get some better advice on waxing/trimming his eyebrows - before it's too late.

How else to explain his unrelentingly bitter outlook on Massachusetts, the one that might make an observer exclaim "So move already!" Latest example: He sees "The Departed" and concludes it's proof the entire state of Massachusetts sucks.

Maybe you remember the Monolith-sized 5 that would show up at random New England spots (like on the back of a lobster boat). Or WBZ anchor Sharon King bicycling to work. But perhaps the most wacked-out local promo ever is this Jackson 5/Poltergeist promo for Channel 5 (thanks to Spatch for showing me all the fun stuff you can find by searching YouTube on terms such as WBZ, WCVB and WHDH - the world is truly a richer place for being able to watch Dawn Hayes read the daily numbers in 1996):
